Pesq. Vet. Bras. Neste trabalho descrevem-se 34 surtos e um foco de intoxicação por Brachiaria spp em ovinos, que ocorreram em diferentes épocas do ano. is the main pasture for ruminants in Central-Brazil, but the crucial problem for their utilization is the toxicity due to the presence of steroidal saponins. This paper reports 35 outbreaks of poisoning by Brachiaria spp in sheep. The poisoning occurred in different seasons of the year. Mean morbidity was 23.2% and mean lethality was 88.3%. The occurrence of clinical signs after the introduction of the sheep into the pastures varied from 15 days to more than 12 months. In 90.1% of the outbreaks, sheep younger than 12 months of age were affected. Clinical signs and gross lesions were characteristic of hepatogenous photosensitization, but more acute cases showed edema of the face and ears, without dermatitis or jaundice. The main histologic lesions of the liver were the presence of macrophages with foamy cytoplasm, found mainly in sinusoids, and sometimes containing negative images of crystals. In eight out of 11 farms visited the outbreaks occurred in Brachiaria decumbens pastures, two in B. brizantha pastures, and one in a pasture of B. decumbens, B. humidicola, and Andropogon sp. Saponin concentrations in the pastures of 11 outbreaks varied from 0.3 to 2.56%. The information generated by this report allows the proposal of measures for control and prevention of Brachiaria spp. poisoning in Central--Brazil.
This chapter presents experiments aiming to examine the aspects of Brachiaria spp. poisoning in sheep in Brazil, and analyse the epidemiological records from spontaneous outbreaks. The susceptibility of sheep to signal grass (Brachiaria decumbens [Urochloa decumbens]) poisoning, the effect of signal grass maturity on poisoning in naïve sheep and the performance of sheep grazing Brachiaria spp. and other pastures are described. It is shown that the susceptibility or resistance to Brachiaria spp. poisoning in sheep is complex and is probably influenced by genetic and acquired resistance and factors determining the saponin concentration in grasses. Nevertheless, Brachiaria spp. is an important option for grazing sheep in central-western Brazil. Therefore, more research is necessary to develop management measures to prevent the intoxication.
Considering the implementation of the National Program for the Control and Eradication of Animal Brucellosis and Tuberculosis (PNCEBT) in 2001, and the need to determine the epidemiological status of animal tuberculosis for future evaluation of the effectiveness of the measures laid down, the objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence and identify risk factors of bovine tuberculosis in the Federal District (DF) of Brazil, as well as to provide an input for the strategic management of PNCEBT. Field testing and data collection was carried out from February to December 2003. The DF was considered a single epidemiological region owing to the small number of existing farms, and the absence of significant differences between the region's farming enterprises, which would justify the stratification of the regional sample. A total of 278 farms were randomly sampled from the local registry database of bovine farms with reproductive activity, in which 2,019 adult cows were tuberculin tested. Only one sampled animal had a positive result, using the comparative cervical tuberculin test, resulting in a bovine tuberculosis prevalence of 0.05% [95% CI: 0.0-0.4%]. The herd-level prevalence of bovine tuberculosis in the DF was estimated as 0.36% [95% CI: 0-2.0%]. The analysis of risk factors was impaired by the results obtained, as the number of cases did not allow for this kind of analysis. Cattle farming in the DF is predominantly aimed at dairy production; however, it is characterized by the presence of small low milk yield herds, which may not favor the introduction and persistency of infection of Mycobacterium bovis. Health authorities from the DF perform surveillance for bovine tuberculosis and maintain the need for tests for the movement of bovines for breeding and those animals destined for any form of animal gathering, especially auctions. Therefore, it is likely that the DF has good conditions for successfully implementing the PNCEBT.

A ecocardiografia é um método não invasivo e adequado para a avaliação das alterações cardíacas em equinos, identificando assim aqueles animais que apresentaram ABSTRACT Echocardiography is a noninvasive and accurate evaluation of cardiac abnormalities in horses, thereby determining those animals that show better adaptation to exercise and conditioning to which they were submitted. The aim of this study was to verify by echocardiographic M-mode and two-dimensional cardiac functional indices of 15 purebred Arabian horses, nine males and six females, ranging in age from 6 to 12 years, subjected to different intensities prolonged endurance exercise. Thus, both groups were divided into three, in which four animals traveled 30km (GI), six animals traveled 90km (GII) and five animals traveled 120km (GIII
