AbstractThe aim of this research was to assess mathematical knowledge for teaching probability (using a frequentist approach) in prospective elementary teachers. Common knowledge of content is analysed based on individual answers to an open problem by 157 Spanish prospective primary school teachers. After discussing with the participants their responses to the problem, two components of pedagogical knowledge are also analysed in 81 of these prospective teachers, working in small groups: (a) to assess specialized content knowledge, we ask participants to identify the mathematical contents in the task; (b) to assess knowledge of content and students, we ask participants to identify which are correct or incorrect among some responses given to the task by children. While in the first part of the assessment we observed misconceptions, such as equiprobability bias, * Maestría en Didáctica de la Matemática por la Universidad de Granada, España.
Obesity appears when energy intake exceeds energy expenditure. The most important variable compound of energy expenditure is physical activity. The global epidemics of obesity seem closely related to reduced physical activity and sedentariness widely increasing nowadays. Once obesity has developed, caloric intake becomes similar to energy expenditure. To lose weight, besides decreasing energy intake, energy expenditure must be increased. The promotion of physical activity is difficult and so the results of treatment of obesity are discouraging for doctors, other health professionals and patients. Proactive efforts from patients and health providers with an intensive feedback between them may be extremely helpful. Nevertheless, more studies are needed to provide better approaches on the role of physical activity for the prevention and treatment of obesity and for long-term weight-loss maintenance.
Background: Promoting a positive attitude towards teaching statistics and probability has become a shared challenge for teachers' training today. Objectives: In this study we examined validity and reliability of Attitudes' Scale towards Probability and its Teaching (ASPT) given by Estrada, Batanero, and Díaz. Design: Following a quantitative methodology. Setting and Participants: The attitudes of a purposive sample of 126 prospective Chilean and Spanish mathematics teachers were analysed using ASPT scale. Data collection and analysis: through an Exploratory Factor Analysis. Results: they were organized into two parts. While the first part focused on the psychometric characteristics of the scale, the second one emphasised on specific attitudes of the sample. Conclusions: The findings revealed a positive attitude towards the scale. It was viewed ASPT to be an instrument with good characteristics to explore attitudinal aspects of teachers.
