O artigo explora o desempenho de diferentes malhas viárias de modo a apresentar quais variáveis estão mais presentes em cada tipo de malha criando diretrizes para a composição de um índice de caminhabilidade. São utilizados três bairros de Lisboa como estudos de caso: (a) Campo de Ourique – cuja malha é regular – (b) Graça – caracterizado pela irregularidade – e (c) Telheiras – cujo desenho apresenta características contemporâneas. Verificou-se que a malha regular apresenta maior homogeneidade viária, menor índice de conversão e maior média de integração, enquanto a malha contemporânea apresentou o pior desempenho e a malha orgânica, por sua vez, uma posição intermediária.
