Youth as a Stage of Life: from rites of passage to rites of impasseSaúde Soc.
At a time when many trajectories of life are characterized by an uncertain and unpredictable future - with frequent entropies and arrhythmic stages - this proposes a sociological reflection concerning generations with a dark future: youth, even with increasing education, without future expectations, elderly with longer life expectancy but cynical about its significance. Data from international surveys and case studies are convened in analysis of the anxieties of age caused by the frustrations and fears in relation to the future when the present is deficient in hope
In a changing society, the transitions made by young people to adult life are characterised as movement (in biographical trajectories) and as a process (of social reproduction). Whilst in the traditional pattern for these transitions young people submitted to rigidly regulated prescriptive forms, the passage to adulthood today is guided by performative cultures which derive from the islands of dissidence where young people now lead their everyday lives. Leisure emerges as the most striking feature of youth cultures, and this leads us to posit the hypothesis of a ,neo‐baroque aestheticisation of youth lifestyles and a leisure ethic that regards life as an adventure. However, we may be led astray by ambivalence (a concept based, significantly, on homonymy) if we take the more general manifestations of these styles (leisure, the emphasis on the visual and persuasiveness) as a uniform phenomenon (youth), when what actually exists is variety (different youth cultures).
This article presents a case study looking at the social upheavals generated by the presence of young Brazilian women in a town in northern Portugal (Bragança) with strong traditionalist traits. Due to their situation as prostitutes, seducers and immigrants, these women were regarded as disturbing the social order. A number of women of the town, calling themselves the Mothers of Bragança, organized themselves into a social movement to drive the Brazilian women out of the town, accusing them of bewitching their husbands with charms and magic. Focusing on issues of social change, the research takes up the challenge of interpreting the mothers’ movement, the stereotypes associated with this movement and the Brazilian incomers, and also certain dilemmas of masculinity.
Objective. To investigate whether the new generations are creating new social values in the current setting of deep social change. Material and methods. Using the generations method (Mannheim), a survey was conducted in 1996, among 2 012 residents of Portugal, to collect data on values and generations of the Portuguese population. The SPAD statistical analysis program was used to perform a multiple correspondence factorial analysis, in addition to a clustertype analysis. Results. The main generational gaps were found in sexual attitudes and practices. Findings showed that groups and aggregates have overrepresentation indices for specific generations, e.g., hedonistic interviewees are characterized by a high index of overrepresentation of youngsters, in contrast to the moralistic or the inhibited subjects. Conclusions. Portuguese youngsters are depicted as a generation with hedonistic and experimental values regarding love and sex life. However, youngsters are at the same time characterized by both their vulnerability and risk behaviors.
