Biology of Podiam dentuu/atie,n Snutli in Trap-nests (I-Iyrnenoptera: Sphecidae: Sphecinae) ABSTRACT -Nests ofPmMini denric'ii/alumn Smith were collectcd using trapnests. at Ribeirão Preto. SP ( 11=66), Pedregulho, SP (n=7). C'ajuru, SP (n-6). Luis Antonio. SP (nH 2) and ltuiutaha. . The trap-nests consisted of scgments ofbamhoo canes, 91 to 221 mm in length and 8 to 24 mm in internal cliamder. C.'ompicted ncsts consisted of a linear scries ofonc to six brood edIs, scparated by mud partitions: 30% of the ncsts had a vestibular ccli and a mud piug closing the entrance. lo the remaining nests lhe external mud partition of the lasi ccli served as lhe nest piug. in both situations lhe external surfoce of the plug was iined with rcsin. and in a fcw nests (n=l0) hits of lcavcs.hody parts or whole dead ants, and/or bees were found glued to the resin. 'lhe ccl is were provisioned with adult and nymphal cockroaches (Bialteilidae). The wasp cggs were laid on the thoracic sterna, hetwecn forc and niidcoxae ofthe cockroaches. The number of cockroaches/celi varied froni 2 to 11 and the total weight/ceii aricd from 94 to 350 mg. The sex ratio obtained in the 1 generation (1.7:1) was male-biascd, hut in lhe gencration ( 1.6:1) was not. Males were rearcd iii edis ai lhe outer end of the nest. Females were iargcr than males, which was also true for the lcngths oftheir respcctive edis. Cocoon lengths anel diametcrs foi lowed the sarne pattern. Natural enemies found inciuded Euiophidae. Bombyliidae. Perilampidae. and Phoridac. 1? denticulwum showcd aI least two generations/year, during the hot and wet season (Seplember to April).
