Samora Machel tinha a intuição desses perigos ao advertir-nos com frequência de que as histórias pessoais, por quanto fossem importantes, só ganhavam sentido quando reconstruídas em conjunto, no quadro da gesta coletiva. A opinião de Michael Pollack, que Samora não tinha lido, é convergente: a memória, como fixação da oralidade subjetiva, é na realidade, diz ele, um "fenômeno construído coletivamente e em mutação constante" (Pollack, 1992).Ver-nos na conjuntura presente -com as experiências acumuladas sobre as quais vamos refletindo, sempre com a preocupação de evitar erros cometidos e insuficiências detectadas -faz-nos reconstruir permanentemente o passado, incorporando os ensinamentos no patrimônio que carregamos. A erosão do tempo vai tornando cada vez menos perceptível a linha que divide a memória pessoal da memória coletiva. Este processo de reconstrução do passado exige o mais rigoroso esforço de apuração e Olhar para a própria experiência de vida afigura-se, para mim, um exercício povoado de riscos. A memória é uma vereda plantada de minas que, ao menor passo inadvertido, te podem rebentar sob os pés deixando graves mutilações ou cancelando mesmo, de forma definitiva, o caminho percorrido. O que foi cada momento das experiên cias que provei perde os contornos na multidão de referências, representações, transferências, projeções, racionalizações quando as lembranças pessoais, inevitavelmente temperadas pela imagem que cada um tem de si, se entrelaçam na memória coletiva de um grande acontecimento como foi a libertação de um país e o lançamento das bases de um projeto nacional.
