ABSTRACTThis work had the aim of evaluating the growth standard and yield of different sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) varieties with meteorogical parameter, during the plant and ratoon crop cane in Mesas regions of Alagoas. This work was carried out in an experimental area of Agrometeorology used a randomized outline with five repetition and four treatments: varieties RB92579, RB931530, SP79-1011 e RB93509, in the Agrarian Center of University Federal of Alagoas in Northeast of Brazil, Rio Largo AL, in a United Argissolico Yellow Latossolo soil. The plant parameter utilized to measure the growth were: tillering, plant height, leaf area index (LAI), dry mater accumulation in stalk and yield sugarcane. No differences were observed among tillering media from varieties in all samplings, and in general, the variety RB92579 obtained the biggest tillering. The sugarcane growth showed sigmoidal shape curve, with three different phases. In the crop initial phase, although it occurred great water conditions the sugarcane growth was slow. In the elongation phase the sugarcane didn t grow in potential, due the occurred water deficit in this phase. The last phase occurred between 1500 e 2015 GD in plant cane and 950 e 1800 GD in ratoon crop. The variety RB92579 obtained LAI values of 3 very early (in 600 GD), this contribu...
The purpose of the present study was to analyze gas exchanges in leaves and the parameters of productivity of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) submitted to two water deficiency periods during which three water regimes were employed: W 1 (1,0 ET o during the entire plant cycle); W 2 (1,0 ET o up to the flowering period and irrigation interruption from the 37 to the 51 st day following sowing, and W 3 (in addition to the reproductive phase, water deficit was also applied during the vegetative stage). Photosynthesis was one of the main physiological factors affected by water deficit. This was not only caused by the stomata closure, but also by carboxilation reduction due to metabolic damage. This effect was, however, offset 24 h after rehydration. During flowering, the water deficit caused crop productivity to drop significantly, reducing the number of pods and the number of seeds per pod, independently of the water deficit during the vegetative stage. The weight of 100 seeds however, was the same regardless of treatment. These results suggest that the water deficit caused the reduction of photo-assimilates, which affected grain productivity. Nevertheless, once properly formed, seeds developed totally; a strategy of the plant to produce less seeds under stress, but viable to perpetuate the species.
SOIL WATER CONTENT IN MAIZE CROP WITH AND WITHOUT STRAW MULCHING IN ARAPIRACA REGION, ALAGOAS, BRAZIL 2 ABSTRACT The soil water content in different crop development stages of maize cultivated with straw mulching and in traditional system, i.e., bare soil rows, was evaluated. Agro meteorology and crop fields observations were carried out in the Arapiraca region (09º38'35" S; 36º40'15" W; 260 m), state of Alagoas, Brazil, from July through October, 2005, in the transition between humid and dry periods. The following stages of maize development and their lengths (days) were considered: initial (20), crop development (35), mid-season (40) and late (30). The soil moisture was estimated from van Genutchen`s model in function of soil water potential. Potential measurements were obtained from automatic tensiometers, installed at the depth of 0.15 m The soil water content in the mulching system was higher than in the traditional one in 65.8 % of the cycle (75 days). However, the soil water was higher in the traditional system in the grain filling period (80 % of days); this resulted in higher grain yield in the traditional system. The use of mulching is not advisable during all maize development cycle in the transition between humid to dry period in that region, mainly if the grain filling period is in the dry period. For moderate to heavy rainfall events (> 7 mm d-1), the infiltration capacity is incremented by mulching. However, for weak events, the rainfall water is stored in mulching and is directly lost to the atmosphere. KEYWORDS: straw mulching, soil water movement, semi-arid, Zea mays
