Introdução: A intoxicação por Aldicarb, composto da família dos carbamatos, conhecido popularmente como “chumbinho”, é frequente na clínica de pequenos animais. Apesar de ser de uso agrícola, é amplamente utilizado como rodenticida doméstico e para intoxicar cães e gatos de maneira ilegal. Desse modo, cabe ao médico veterinário reconhecer os sinais clínicos dessa intoxicação e estar preparado para promover o tratamento em casos de emergência por ingestão de Aldicarb. Objetivo: Evidenciar os malefícios causados por Aldicarb, demonstrar a urgência para o tratamento e listar as principais formas de tratamento utilizadas. Materiais e métodos: A Realização da pesquisa foi desenvolvida com base em literaturas e em plataformas cientificas como Pubvet®, SciELO e Google Acadêmico (Scholar), utilizando os seguintes descritores: carbamato, intoxicação de cães e gatos por Aldicarb e acetilcolinesterase. Resultado: De acordo com a pesquisa, constatou-se que a toxicidade do Aldicarb desenvolve-se por meio da inibição competitiva da enzima acetilcolinesterase (AChE), responsável por inativar a ação da acetilcolina. Quando a AChE é inibida ocorre uma hiperestimulação dos receptores muscarínicos e nicotínicos. Os sinais clínicos aparecem rapidamente, causando a morte do animal em poucos minutos, dependendo da dose ingerida. O acúmulo de acetilcolina em cães e gatos causa hiperexcitabilidade comportamental, demonstrado por um quadro de agitação aguda, após isso, outros sintomas podem ocorrer, dentre estes o vômito, diarréia, miose, bradicardia, sialorréia. Em casos graves os animais apresentam cianose e dispnéia devido ao acúmulo de secreções no trato respiratório e da broncoconstricção. Ademais, a causa mortis é a hipóxia, resultante dessas alterações. As medidas emergenciais consistem em induzir o animal ao vômito ou realizar lavagem gástrica com o objetivo de impedir uma grande absorção do carbamato; uso do sulfato de atropina para impedir os efeitos colinérgicos, que irá bloquear os efeitos da acetilcolina; em caso de hipóxia grave, é necessário o fornecimento da oxigenoterapia. Conclusão: Por ser um composto de alta toxicidade e de fácil aquisição, a ingestão de Aldicarb tem sido casuística frequente na clínica de pequenos animais. Cabe ao médico veterinário estar atento aos sinais que o paciente apresenta, para desse modo realizar o atendimento e o tratamento de maneira eficiente.
