There is little information on nickel adsorption by Brazilian soils. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of pH, organic matter, and iron oxides on nickel adsorption by three soils: a clayey Anionic "Rhodic" Acrudox, a sandy clay loam Anionic "Xanthic" Acrudox, and a clayey Rhodic Hapludalf. Soil samples were collected from the 0-0.2 m layer and treated to eliminate organic matter and iron oxides. The nickel adsorption was evaluated in the original samples and in those treated to remove organic matter and to remove both, organic matter and iron oxides, using 2 g soil + 20 mL of 0.01 mol L -1 CaCl 2 solution containing 5 mg L -1 Ni, pH varying from 3.5 to 7.5. The nickel adsorption decreased with the elimination of organic matter. For the samples without organic matter and iron oxides, adsorption decreased only in the Anionic "Rhodic" Acrudox. The pH was the main factor involved in nickel adsorption variation, and for soil samples without organic matter and iron oxides, the maximum adsorption occurred at higher pH values.
Imazaqnin is a herbicide used intensively in Brazil to control a large number of weeds associated with soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Most of the Brazilian soils are highly weathered (50–60% are Oxisols). The extent of sorption and desorption of imazaquin in these soils will dictate its mobility and environmental fate once microbial degradation is negligible. Sorption and desorption of imazaquin were studied in nine samples (seven surface and two subsurface) from highly weathered soils and in two other soils. Sorption of imazaquin was low in all soils, except in the soil with high organic carbon content (OC) content and low soil‐solution pH (Typic Humaquept, GH soil). The OC and the soil‐solution pH were the soil attributes that correlated better with the amount of sorbed imazaquin in the studied highly weathered soils [r = 0.91 (significant at the 0.01 probability level) and −0.62 (significant at the 0.05 probability level), respectively]. The Fe oxide content was an important soil attribute affecting sorption of imazaquin when OC was low. In general, a model based on hydrophobic interactions was capable of predicting sorption of imazaquin. However, this model and others based on multivariate regression were not capable of predicting sorption of imazaquin on highly weathered soils with pH‐dependent charges and low OC, such as the subsurface acric soils. Low sorption implies a high potential for mobility and, therefore, imazaquin may reach important sources of drinking water. This potential for mobility may be diminished in highly weathered soils due to their acidic nature and high Fe and Al oxide contents.

The driving force of boron adsorption on some tropical soils was evaluated by means of thermodynamic parameters. The batch method was employed, and the reaction was monitored at different pH values. The Langmuir equation successfully fitted the experimental results and provided reasonable isotherm parameters. Boron adsorption increased as a function of the pH of the soil solution and the concentration of added boron. The reaction was favorable and proceeded spontaneously, being strongly exoergic, as indicated by a negative free energy (ΔG) and a separation factor (K R ) < 1. The boron adsorption phenomenon and the soilsolution interface were thermodinamically described using a theoretical model. Keywords: tropical soils; boron; adsorption.
We examined the relationships between topography, soil properties and tree species composition in a Neotropical swamp forest in southeastern Brazil. Plots were sampled in the forest, encompassing three different soil ground water regimes along the topographical declivity. All non-climbing plant individuals with trunk height [1.3 m were sampled. A canonical correspondence analysis-CCA-of the species-environmental relationships grouped tree species according to drainage and chemical soil conditions. A total of 86 species were found, being 77 species in the inferior, 40 species in the intermediate and 35 species in the superior topographic section. Some species were among the 10 most abundant ones, both in the overall sampled area and in each topographical section, with alternation events occurring only with their abundance position. However, substantial differences in floristic composition between sections were detected in a fine spatial scale, due to higher number of species, diversity index (H 0 ) and species unique (exclusives) in the inferior topographic section. These higher values can be attributed to its higher spatial heterogeneity that included better drained and seasonally waterlogged soils, higher soil fertility and lower acidity. The increase of the soil water saturation and the uniform conditions derived from the superficial water layer has led to a lower number of species and an increase on the palm trees abundance in the intermediate and superior sections. Our results showed that at a small spatial scale niche differentiation must be an important factor related to the increase of the local diversity. The wide distribution of the most abundant species in the studied area and the increase of local diversity corroborate the pattern of distribution of species in larger scales of swamp forests, in which the most abundant species repeat themselves in high densities in different remnants. However, the floristic composition of each remnant is strongly variable, contributing to the increase of regional diversity.
