Imaging plays an essential role in the diagnosis and treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This review describes the imaging modalities most commonly employed by ophthalmologists caring for patients with neovascular AMD. Imaging modalities discussed include fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography, indocyanine green angiography, and fundus autofluorescence.
A driving force for the realization of a sustainable energy supply in Europe is the integration of distributed, renewable energy resources. Due to their dynamic and stochastic generation behaviour, utilities and network operators are confronted with a more complex operation of the underlying distribution grids. Additionally, due to the higher flexibility on the consumer side through partly controllable loads, ongoing changes of regulatory rules, technology developments, and the liberalization of energy markets, the system's operation needs adaptation. Sophisticated design approaches together with proper operational concepts and intelligent automation provide the basis to turn the existing power system into an intelligent entity, a so-called smart grid. While reaping the benefits that come along with those intelligent behaviours, it is expected that the system-level testing will play a significantly larger role in the development of future solutions and technologies. Proper validation approaches, concepts, and corresponding tools are partly missing until now. This paper addresses these issues by discussing the progress in the integrated Pan-European research infrastructure project ERIGrid where proper validation methods and tools are currently being developed for validating smart grid systems and solutions.
A 28-year-old normal East Indian was found to have a pericentric inversion of the Y chromosome. After reviewing the literature, it was concluded that an inverted Y chromosome does not impede the production of normal sperm and does not predispose to non-disjunction of other chromosomes in the progeny. Thus, the earlier concept of nondisjunction was rejected, and it is suggested that aberrant cases with aneuploidy and an inverted Y are fortuitous. The pericentric inverted Y is inherited from generation to generation and has no clinical significance. The prevalence of males with pericentric Y inversion in the general population is approximately 1 per 1000. It is suggested that a pericentric inversion of the Y chromosome is a rare chromosomal heteromorphism and should be called type III.
Cancer is a major reason for veterinary consultation, especially in companion animals. Cancer surveillance plays a key role in prevention but opportunities for such surveillance in companion animals are limited by the lack of suitable veterinary population health infrastructures. In this paper we describe a pathology-based animal tumour registry (PTR) developed within the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET) built from electronic pathology records (EPR) submitted to this network. From an original collection of 180232 free text (non-structured) EPRs reported between April 2018 and June 2019, we used specific text-mining methodologies to identify 109895 neoplasias. These data were normalized to describe both the tumour (type and location) and the animal (breed, neutering status and veterinary practice postcode). The resulting PTR, the largest of its kind for companion animals to date, is an important research resource being able to facilitate a wide array of research in areas including surveillance, clinical decision making and comparative cancer biology.
Renewables are key enablers in the plight to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cope with anthropogenic global warming. The intermittent nature and limited storage capabilities of renewables culminate in new challenges that power system operators have to deal with in order to regulate power quality and ensure security of supply. At the same time, the increased availability of advanced automation and communication technologies provides new opportunities for the derivation of intelligent solutions to tackle the challenges. Previous work has shown various new methods of operating highly interconnected power grids, and their corresponding components, in a more effective way. As a consequence of these developments, the traditional power system is being transformed into a cyber-physical energy system, a smart grid. Previous and ongoing research have tended to mainly focus on how specific aspects of smart grids can be validated, but until there exists no integrated approach for the analysis and evaluation of complex cyber-physical systems configurations. This paper introduces integrated research infrastructure that provides methods and tools for validating smart grid systems in a holistic, cyber-physical manner. The corresponding concepts are currently being developed further in the European project ERIGrid.
The frequency of different types of satellite associations of nucleolar organizing human chromosomes (i.e. acrocentric chromosomes; 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22) is reported using 10 normal individuals by Ag-staining technique. The preferential involvement of acrocentric chromosomes in satellite association is suggested. Only acrocentric chromosomes with active NORs (i.e. Ag-stained) were found in association while unstained (inactive NORs) chromosomes were never seen in satellite association. In general as number of NORs expression increase, the frequency of association per cell was also increased. A possible mechanism and the clinical consequences of such an unusual phenophenon is described.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
