Das Thema ,Medizin im Mittelalter' stellt der germanistischen Sprachwissenschaft die Aufgabe, das mittelalterliche sprachliche Wissen über den menschlichen Körper, seine Krankheiten und seine Heilung zu rekonstruieren. Medizinisches Wissen und sprachliches Wissen sind nicht gleichzusetzen. Die Texte können allerdings konkrete Anhaltspunkte dafür geben, welche fachlichen Wissensbestände im Mittelalter verfugbar waren. Von hier aus können Zugänge zu den medizingeschichtlichen, sozialgeschichtlichen und literaturgeschichtlichen Facetten des Themas eröffnet werden. Darüber hinaus zielt die Rekonstruktion des sprachlichen Wissens in einer linguistischen Perspektive auf die Frage, mit welchen Mitteln das vorhandene medizinische Wissen versprachlicht wird. Hier spielen nach traditioneller Vorstellung vor allem Fachwortschätze eine Rolle, es können aber auch andere Merkmale wie spezifische, an eine Textsorte gebundene syntaktische Muster oder besondere Formen der Textgliederung und -hervorhebung bedeutsam sein. Am Beginn einer solchen Rekonstruktion sollte in jedem Fall die Sichtung aller mittelalterlichen volkssprachigen Texte medizinischen Inhalts und ihrer lexikalischen und grammatisch-strukturellen Ausgestaltung stehen. Damit kommt der gesamte mittelalterliche Überlieferungszeitraum des Deutschen ins Blickfeld, denn bereits in althochdeutscher Zeit finden sich Rezepte, Zaubersprüche, Glossen und Glossare, in denen in der Volkssprache auf medizinische Inhalte Bezug genommen wird. Wenn die volkssprachigen Anfange des Schreibens über Körper, Krankheit und Heilung bereits bis ins 8. und 9. Jahrhundert zurückreichen, so fällt auch die Genese, Entwicklung und erste Ausbreitung der medizinischen deutschen Fachsprache in diese frühe Zeit.' In der historischen Fachsprachenforschung wie auch in der literaturwissenschaftlichen Fachprosaforschung hat das Frühmittelalter aber bisher kaum Beachtung gefunden. An dieser Stelle soll daher zunächst ein kurzer Überblick über die ältesten medizinischen Texte in deutscher Sprache gegeben werden. Um die Frage der Rekonstruktion des sprachlich vermittelten medizinischen Wissens mit der linguistischen Frage nach dem "Wie" der sprachlichen Gestaltung zu verknüpfen, soll es im Folgenden vor allem darum gehen, ob bereits in den ältesten Texten medizinischen Inhalts medizinische Fachwortschätze verwendet werden, die Aufschlüsse über das medizinische Wissen der Zeit zulassen.
