Highlights: Photogrammetric technique saves the real information that emerges and prevents much of it from disappearing, a common occurrence in archaeological excavations. Virtual reconstruction is an effective method of presenting the results in an educational way for the general public. The final product needs to show the result of a scientific hypothesis in an attractive and understandable way. Abstract:This article reports how the new information technologies are used in two practical examples in the field of archaeology from the early stages of excavation up to the reporting of the results. The first example is an urban settlement focused on the process of documentation and recording, the presentation of the archaeological remains and the resulting museum discourse in Tortosa, Tarragona (Spain). The second example is a settlement near the coast with no urban problems or conditions, which is more focused on the diffusion of research results through a variety of virtual communication channels (La Cella, Salou). In this regard, we present a variety of techniques and systems that we apply to achieve our objectives. Photogrammetry is now an essential tool for recording archaeological data because it facilitates fieldwork, provides extremely accurate measurements and considerably increases the quality of the result. It also enables archaeological and heritage research to be socialized and the results target scientific and interpretative analysis. If it is combined with the appropriate software, the remains of artefacts and buildings recovered at the sites, and which in some cases cannot be conserved, can be displayed in 3D. Finally, it can be used to make recreations and virtual interpretations that can present all these archaeological data to a non-specialized public in the form of a virtual museum, an immersive virtual reality experience, or can be applied to improve scientific research, through 3D modelling and virtual experimentation. Keywords: dissemination; 3D reconstruction; virtual recreation; photogrammetry; virtual reality; heritage.
Cities and urban areas in Europe are very heterogeneous because of their geographic situations, climate, heritage and trajectory, activities, governance and urban management, population, etc. In order to better understand European urban systems despite the diversity of urban characteristics across Europe and taking into account its complexity, the European Environment Agency (EEA) and its European Topic Centre on Urban, Land and Soil systems (ETC-ULS) are developing a methodology to implement a comprehensive and integrated analysis of sustainability of a large number of very diverse cities. This paper reveals the first results of the ongoing project on "City Typologies in Europe". With this aim, the concept of a city typology was elaborated and tested using existing and relevant data on the urban system at European level. 385 European cities were classified to identify different clusters which are derived from 59 indicators under different domains (economic, social and environmental) that reflect the major city characteristics. The objective of this typology is to show the differences and similarities of the huge diversity of European cities by synthesizing available and comparable information. By reclassifying cities into groups, representative cities (role-models) will be identified for each cluster. Since cities are the key players in minimizing the use of resources and developing the circular economic model and are also crucial for the quality of life and well-being of cities' residents, analyzing those
Abstract. Archaeological excavations carried out at Turó del Calvari (Tarragona, Spain) have revealed a protohistoric building interpreted as one of the earliest enclosures of power operating during the Early Iron Age in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. The structure is exceptional in several respects: the techniques of construction, the materials used, and the topographic situation. The building is perfectly integrated in the landscape and has an exquisite geometrical design, with measurement units based on the Iberian foot. The intended beauty in having used the golden ratio in its construction and an orientation that is both stellar and solar demonstrates the existence at that time of a complete series of mechanisms of representation and territorial control. This was based on the use of rituals and feasts as elements of political cohesion by an emergent elite within a process that reproduced a scaled-down Mediterranean cultural system in an indigenous space.
