The Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy deserves to be recognized as a crusader for social justice. In the later half of his life, he preached and practiced his own brand of Christian love, and has been looked on as a model for nonviolent resistance. While not a perfect man, Tolstoy demonstrated the courage of his convictions, and his life and writings have currency for contemporary problems.
