Based on the results of an ongoing study into the impact of e-commerce on UK business. The authors have provided input from both academic and commercial viewpoints. The intention is to monitor the changing landscape of the commercial world over a period of time and this study provides grounding to this process, drawing some important conclusions that will have an effect across a large section of UK business. The paper charts the advent of the e-commerce revolution and how business is adapting to this new paradigm. Examples include the Co-operative Bank, Waterstones and RS Components. Legal aspects of the Internet and commerce on it are also interpreted with ramifications for organisations that are protecting their data as well as positioning themselves to exploit the commercial opportunities that the Internet offers.
The number of telephone circuits carried by a submarine cable system can be doubled by using the normal gaps in speech to interpolate additional conversations. TASI is a high‐speed transmission and switching system that assigns a talker to a channel as soon as he starts to talk and disconnects him when he pauses, if someone else needs the channel. Switching from channel to channel may occur many times during a typical call, but the effect on transmission quality is negligible because the switching time is fast compared with the syllabic rate.
TASI (Time Assignment Speech Interpolation) has been in service on transatlantic submarine cable channels since mid‐1960. Measurement of service quality on one TASI system (White Plains‐London) indicates that system performance equals or exceeds the original engineering objectives in all but a few cases. Field modifications now being made should bring these exceptions into closer agreement with objectives.
A companion paper4 discusses in detail the design considerations for TASI speech detectors and describes subjective tests made to determine the maximum permissible loading of TASI circuits without impairment of service.
