What happens when a stone hits a windscreen? Most drivers see a fleeting glimpse of something coming towards them, followed by a loud bang as the stone bounces off. Sometimes a single crack will form, and in the worst case the crack will grow and branch across the whole screen. In either case, the screen has to be replaced. This may be annoying, but at least the windscreen has done one of its most important jobs: to prevent the stone from penetrating the screen and injuring the people inside.
