Thermolabile Hydrocarbons, 11')Ring Size Effects on the Rates of Thermolysis of l,l'-Diphwyl-l,l'-bicycloalkylsz~ 1,l'-Diphenyl-1,l'-bicycloalkyls 1 with the ring size n = 3-8 were prepared and their rates of thermal decomposition were determined. An unprecedented large ring size effect on the rates (factor 1014 for 1 n = 3 and n = 8 at 220°C) was observed. In addition to I-strain effects steric repulsions of non-bonded groups, like F-strain, are made responsible for the main part of the ring size effect according to models and by comparison with the ring size effect on the thermal decomposition of I, Ildiphenyl-azocycloalkanes 6.Die unterschiedliche Bildungstendenz verschieden strukturierter Alkyl-Radikale ist ein fur die Radikalchemie wichtiges und daher vie1 diskutiertes Phanomen 3-6).
The Reactivity-Selectivity Principle, 3 ') Application of the Reactivity-Selectivity Principle to Wittig ReactionsIn Wittig reactions of phosphonium ylids 4 a -c and aldehydes 5 a -e the selectivity of the ylids increases with increasing reactivity in acetonitrile below 130°C. At 20°C the competition constant k4x,sn/k4x,se increases from 320 to 705 when 4c is replaced by the ylide 4a, which is 5.7 times more reactive. The p-value increases from 2.35 to 2.70 (table 1). Measurements at 70°C show that the reason for the failing of the reactivity-selectivity principle (RSP) is not the fact that the temperature of measurement is above the isoselective temperature T s (table 2, figure). The experiments are explained by a one-step formation of oxaphosphetanes 3 at the rate-determining step. The opposite effect of substituents in phosphonium ylides (X in 4a-c) on the formation of the P -0-bond on the one hand and of the C -C-bond on the other, makes transition states likely at which the individual bonds have been formed to different extents, e.g. 6 or 7 (scheme 2).Kinetische Studien an Wittig-Reaktionen ' ) haben gezeigt, da5 bei Umsetzungen stabilisierter Phosphor-Ylide 1 (R'= CO'R", Aryl) mit aromatischen Aldehyden in salzfreien, aprotonischen Losungen die Bildung des Betains 2 nicht der geschwindigkeitsbestimmende Schritt sein kann 3,4).
