This study examined whether the relation between maladaptive emotion regulation and aggression was mediated by deviant social information processing (SIP). Participants were 193 preschool children. Emotion regulation and aggression were rated by teachers. Deviant SIP (i.e., attribution of hostile intent, aggressive response generation, aggressive response evaluation and decision) was measured from children's responses to hypothetical social conflicts. Findings revealed that the relation between maladaptive emotion regulation and aggression was direct and not mediated by SIP biases (i.e., aggressive response generation, aggressive response evaluation and decision). Results are discussed from a theoretical and methodological perspective.
Emotionsregulationsstrategien und aggressives Verhalten im KindergartenalterPraxis der Kinderpsychologie und Kinderpsychiatrie 59 (2010) Emotionsregulationsstrategien und aggressives Verhalten im KindergartenalterJohanna Helmsen und Franz Petermann Summary Emotion Regulation Strategies and Aggressive Behavior of Preschool ChildrenThe present study (N = 193) examined use of emotional regulation strategies in physically and relationally aggressive preschool children (mean age: 55 months), compared to non-aggressive peers. To assess emotion regulation, we conducted a structured videotaped behavioral observation of a situation where frustration was elicited. Afterwards, regulation strategies were analyzed in seven categories. Physical and relational aggression was rated by preschool teachers. Cut-off scores were used to classify children as relationally or physically aggressive. Results show that physically aggressive children focused their attention on frustrating stimulus and used venting and cognitive verbalization more often than non-physically aggressive children. Relationally aggressive children used venting more often than non-relationally aggressive children. Findings suggest that aggressive children would benefit from training in emotion regulation.Prax.
In recent years, social-emotional competence of preschool children has come to the fore. In spite of this, social-emotional skills have been largely neglected in health examination for school entry in comparison with cognitive skills. After a description of the concepts "emotional competence" and "social competence" the importance of social-emotional skills for school readiness and academic achievement is shown. Then we describe how these skills can be assessed in health examinations for school entry. One can differentiate between behavioural observation, interview, and questionnaires. Advantages and disadvantages of these methods are demonstrated and suitable diagnostic instruments are mentioned.
