Cet article s'interroge sur l'utilisation possible d'une banque de données de textes d'élèves qui comporte l'ensemble des productions par une classe dans le cadre d'une séquence, ainsi que leur contexte d'enseignement. Le corpus choisi est celui d'une classe de 5e engagée dans l'écriture. C'est à travers l'examen des textes d'élèves dans leurs différents états que la question des effets de la séquence sur l'apprentissage est abordé : – en confrontant les expansions du nom produites et analysées dans le cadre d'une séance d'étude de la langue et l'usage que font les élèves des groupes nominaux étendus ; – en comparant les fonctions de la description que les élèves sont en mesure de verbaliser et celles, beaucoup plus riches, qu'ils mettent en oeuvre dans leur « roman » ; – en étudiant la diversité de leurs stratégies, les obstacles rencontrés et parfois dépassés. En croisant ces résultats, il est permis de définir plus finement le rôle des activités métalinguistiques dans la séquence.
