ResumoO objectivo central da investigação realizada é tentar compreender as características específicas da profissão de jornalista, seja nos modos como ela é encarada "de dentro" pelos seus directos protagonistas, seja nos modos como ela é olhada e julgada "de fora", pelo todo social com que interage. Um segundo objectivo, complementar deste, é compreender qual o papel particular das questões éticas e deontológicas na definição de uma identidade profissional dos jornalistas, bem como os modos em que ela se pode concretizar. No capítulo específico da ética, percorremos as mais importantes teorias, procurando discernir o que nelas há de semelhante e o que há de diferente. O entendimento de que as responsabilidades éticas, numa profissão com a influência e impacto social do jornalismo, implicam obrigatoriamente a necessidade de prestação de contas à sociedade leva-nos depois a analisar as modalidades concretas que essa prestação de contas pode e deve assumir. Identificamos as vantagens da auto-regulação dos media e dos seus profissionais, e também os seus limites e fragilidades. Passamos em revista um conjunto de mecanismos e instrumentos de auto-regulação, terminando na figura do Provedor do Leitor. Tendo presentes as novas condições em que se exerce o jornalismo na era digital, bem como os novos desafios que se colocam ao "campo jornalístico", adiantamos a hipótese de que as exigências éticas -integrando um exercício competente do ofício -serão cada vez mais centrais na definição de uma identidade profissional específica dos jornalistas.Palavras-chave: Jornalismo, jornalistas, profissão, identidade profissional, ética, auto--regulação * Este texto condensa as ideias essenciais da apresentação oral da tese de doutoramento, com este mesmo título, tal como foi feita na sessão da sua defesa pública, em 5 de Janeiro de 2007, na Universidade do Minho.

As mUltiplas quest6es suscitadas pela rela9ao entre jomalistas e fontes de informa9ao fazem parte das mais recorrentes preocupa90es desta classe profissional. Nao admira, portanto, que sejam referidas com frequencia nos C6digos Deontol6gicos dos jornalistas. Constatamos entretanto, quando lemos c6digos de diversas latitudes, que essas referencias sao muito desiguais -tanto no ponnenor com que aprofundam (ou nao) 0 assunto, como no maior ou menor enfoque dado a detenninados aspectos particulares -, revelando sensibilidades diversas, tradi90es particulares e ate enquadramentos legais especificos. 0 objectivo desta comunica9ao e tentar mostrar, de modo necessariamente breve e nao exaustivo, as principais semelhan9as e diferen9as existentes nos C6digos Deontol6-gicos (ou C6digos de Conduta Profissional) de jornalistas, no espa90 europeu, quanto a abordagem da problematica das fontes. A pandemia da covid-19 e o subsequente processo de confinamento conduziram a linhas de convulsão em diferentes setores da sociedade. Marcado por um contexto de instabilidade e incerteza, onde diferentes manifestações de transformação tecnológica, económica e social potenciam novas práticas e convenções, bem como suscitam novos e renovados desafios deontológicos, o jornalismo não é exceção. Com base nas respostas de um inquérito a 890 jornalistas portugueses, o presente artigo procura mapear os efeitos do estado de emergência de março a abril de 2020 nas práticas e rotinas, e nos preceitos ético-profissionais de uma atividade que avoca uma reavivada relevância num ambiente de desinformação e “infodemia”. Mais do que revelarem novos problemas, os resultados sugerem uma acentuação dos desafios e dilemas pré-existentes. No plano das práticas, indicia-se uma domiciliação relativamente transversal da atividade. Este fenómeno é acompanhado por marcas de despersonalização do contacto com as fontes e eventos, e por sinais de isolamento social dos jornalistas. No campo ético-deontológico, sublinha-se a emergência de questões deontológicas particulares no contexto da pandemia, onde os aspetos relacionados com o rigor — rejeição do sensacionalismo, distinção clara entre factos e opiniões ou repúdio de quaisquer formas de censura —, assim como os elementos subjacentes ao contacto com as fontes, assumem especial dimensão.
