Aiming at producing a concentrate with a silica content lower than 1.00%, laboratory experiments were conducted using a sample of the concentrate from Samarco's mechanical flotation, which presented 3.08% silica content. This sample was split in two size ranges: +105mm and -105mm. The -105mm fraction, representing 76.69% of the initial mass, was submitted to another flotation, generating 0.61% silica content. The fraction +105mm, representing 23.31% of the initial mass, was ground 100% -105mm, deslimed, and submitted to flotation. Concentrates with 0.90% silica content were obtained. Considering the mass proportions of the two size fractions, the calculated silica content of the concentrate is 0.68%, which is considered satisfactory for the objective of this investigation. The major reasons for the 0.90% silica content are the presence of silicon in the lattice of goethites and the presence of residual slimes in the pores of porous hematite
Abstract Itabirite is an iron ore found in Brazil. The future Itabirite resources require grinding down to a fine size to liberate and concentrate. The conventional comminution circuits assumed in projects processing Itabirite consist of three stages of crushing followed by ball mills. These circuits require high demand for maintenance and large area of construction. Hence, was conducted bench-scale and pilot-scale tests to understand and to characterize the comminution potential of Itabirite ores using semiautogenous (SAG) and fully-autogenous (AG or FAG) grinding. The pilot tests demonstrated that SAG and AG technology work properly for the size reduction of Itabirite.
INCREASE OF GRINDING LABORATORY TESTS PRODUCTIVITY BY USING SIMPLE MATH EQUATIONS AbstractWithin the iron ore technological characterization, we observe the trend of increasing the number of grinding laboratory tests, due to the impoverishment of the iron ore major deposits and consequently the reduction of quartz liberation degree. This is the iron ore main mineral gangue, and grindind is necessary to liberate it. Vale´s Centro de Pesquisas Tecnólogicas has a procedure to execute exploratory grinding tests to define the required time starting from a top size of 2 mm to obtain a product with a certain % retained on 0.15 mm, the control mesh of primary grinding. This time use to be performed by trial and error procedure, ie initially the grinding test is conducted by an initial time, and then this time is varied to achieve the desired particle size in the grinded product. As a result the process time become lagging, conducting on average up to five tests are necessary to obtain the required grinding time. By using the Donda-Rosa's equation, the grinding time to reach the desired particle size is normally achieved in the second grinding. The obtained results so far are promising, showing to be possible to use this equation to predict the grinding time. As a result, this new method gave a productivity gain once the average number of required exploratory tests were reduced from four to at the most two.
