In this work, the problem of Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) and Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) of wind turbines is addressed. Fault detection is based on the use of interval observers and unknown but bounded description of the noise and modeling errors. Fault isolation is based on analyzing the observed fault signatures on-line and matching them with the theoretical ones obtained using structural analysis and a row-reasoning scheme. Fault tolerant control is based on the use of virtual sensors/actuators to deal with sensor and actuator faults, respectively. More precisely, these FTC schemes, that have been proposed previously in state space form, are reformulated in input/output form. Since an active FTC strategy is used, the FTC module uses the information from the FDI module to replace the real faulty sensor/actuator by activating the corresponding virtual sensor/actuator. Virtual actuators/sensors require additionally a fault estimation module to compensate the fault. In this work, a fault estimation approach based on batch least squares is used. The performance of the proposed FDI and FTC schemes is assessed using the proposed fault scenarios considered in the wind turbine benchmark proposed at IFAC SAFEPROCESS 2009. Satisfactory results have been obtained in both FDI and FTC.
This paper proposes a new method for leak localization in water distribution networks (WDNs). In a first stage, residuals are obtained by comparing pressure measurements with the estimations provided by a WDN model. In a second stage, a classifier is applied to the residuals with the aim of determining the leak location. The classifier is trained with data generated by simulation of the WDN under different leak scenarios and uncertainty conditions. The proposed method is tested both using synthetic and experimental data with real WDNs of different sizes. The comparison with the current existing approaches shows a performance improvement.
This paper presents a method for leak localization in water distribution networks (WDNs) based on Bayesian classifiers. Probability density functions for pressure residuals are calibrated off-line for all the possible leak scenarios by using a hydraulic simulator, and considering the leak size uncertainty, demand uncertainty and sensor noise. A Bayesian classifier is applied on-line to the computed residuals to determine the location of leaks in the WDN. A time horizon based reasoning combined with the Bayesian classifier is also proposed to improve the localization accuracy. Two case studies based on the Hanoi and the Nova Icària networks are used to illustrate the performance of the proposed approach. Fault detection is based on the use of parity equations assuming unknown but bounded description of the noise and modeling errors. The fault detection test is based on checking the consistency between the measurements and the model by finding if the formers are inside the interval prediction bounds. The fault isolation algorithm is based on analyzing the observed fault signatures on-line, and matching them with the theoretical ones obtained using structural analysis. Finally, the proposed approach is tested using the wind farm benchmark proposed in the context of the wind farm FDI/FTC competition.
Abstract:In this paper, the problem of identification for passive robust fault detection when parametric modeling uncertainty is considered. In particular, a zonotope is used to bound the model parametric uncertainty. Two identification methods are introduced following, respectively, the worst-case and setmembership approaches. Then, the underlying hypothesis are discussed and performance is compared.These two identification approaches lead to two robust fault detection tests (namely, the direct and inverse tests) that are also discussed. A case study based on a four tanks system is used to exemplify the properties of the two identification and associated fault detection approaches.
SUMMARYIn this paper, robust fault detection based on adaptive threshold generation of a non-linear system described by means of a linear parameter-varying (LPV) model is addressed. Adaptive threshold is generated using an interval LPV observer that generates a band of predicted outputs taking into account the parameter uncertainties bounded using intervals. An algorithm that propagates the uncertainty based on zonotopes is proposed. The design procedure of this interval LPV observer is implemented via pole placement using linear matrix inequalities. Finally, the minimum detectable fault is characterized using fault sensitivity analysis and residual uncertainty bounds. Two examples, one based on a quadruple-tank system and another based on a two-degree of freedom helicopter, are used to assess the validity of the proposed fault detection approach.᭧
In this paper, a model reference fault tolerant control (FTC) strategy based on a reconfiguration of the reference model, with the addition of a virtual actuator block, is presented for linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. The advantage of the proposed FTC method is that the control system is reconfigured in such a way that the nominal controller is used without the need of retuning it. Moreover, the presence of saturations is taken into account through their incorporation in the reference model, and the introduction of additional varying parameters, such that the system exhibits some graceful performance degradation when the system could not achieve the desired state because of the actuator limits. The design of the control scheme is based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and polytopic LPV techniques. In order to implement the proposed active FTC strategy, a fault estimation is required. In this paper, the fault estimation is formulated as a parameter estimation problem, which is solved using a set-membership approach.
