The structurally diverse rocky shores along the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, support a varied fauna and provide refuges for many organisms. Some of these environments allow for extensive microhabitats, among them the sand reefs formed by the polychaete Phragmatopoma lapidosa, which occupy much of this area. The beauty of the landscape attracts large numbers of tourists, who contribute to the damage to the sand reef colonies, causing an imbalance in the patterns of population distribution and of this ecosystem. We describe the structure and population biology of the redfinger rubble crab Eriphia gonagra, and investigated the differential occupation of the habitat by each demographic category of this species. Crabs were sampled monthly for two consecutive years on the rocky coast of Grande Beach, Ubatuba, São Paulo, during spring low tides. Sampling was carried out over an area of approximately 1200 m 2 , during two hours on the rock surface and another two hours on the sand reefs. A total of 1407 crabs were collected; 776 on the sand reef (SR) and 631 on the rocky shore (RO). The majority of juvenile crabs inhabited the SR, while adult crabs were equally distributed in both microhabitats. This study showed that the SR is a natural nursery ground for the establishment of the early juvenile stages of E. gonagra, which use the reefs as a refuge and food resource. Many other organisms (mollusks, echinoderms, polychaetes etc.) settle on the reefs, and these areas may be among the most important in maintaining benthic diversity in the region. Keywords: coastal structures, crab nursery, ecological zonation, Xanthoidea, ontogenetic habitat shift.
The present study assessed the composition and abundance of species of Anomura at the southeastern coast of Brazil. Sampling was carried out monthly from January 1998 to December 1999, in three regions of Ubatuba: Ubatumirim Bay, Ubatuba Bay and Mar Virado Bay, using a fishing boat equipped with two double-rigged nets. Four transects were defined at depths of 5, 10, 15, and 20 meters in each bay. Two additional transects were defined perpendicular to the beach: one in a sheltered area and the other in an area exposed to wave action. A total of 6356 specimens of anomurans representing 15 species and 9 genera of 3 superfamilies (11 Paguroidea, 1 Hippoidea, and 3 Galatheoidea) was recorded. Paguristes robustus was recorded for the first time from the São Paulo State coast. Dardanus insignis was the most abundant species, followed by Loxopagurus loxochelis and Porcellana sayana. The high abundance of P. sayana may be related to the presence of D. insignis and Petrochirus diogenes, because this porcellanid crab lives inside the shells occupied by these hermit crabs. Species richness varied among the bays and transects, but the highest values were observed at the exposed and sheltered areas. The highest abundance of anomurans was recorded at a depth of 20 m during winter in the bays Mar Virado and Ubatuba. The anomuran species comprised 75% of the total number previously recorded from coastal non-consolidated bottoms of São Paulo. We therefore infer that this region affords favourable biotic and abiotic conditions for the settlement and maintenance of a large number of species of Anomura. RESUMO
The century-old mangrove crab Ucides cordatus Linnaeus, 1763 harvesting is a traditional activity of Northeastern Brazilian coastal communities, who use it as food, source of income and cultural reference. The extractivism and marketing of this crustacean is essential for the socioeconomic development of the states of Maranhão, Piauí and Ceará. The aim of this study was to carry out the monitoring of harvesting and landing of the mangrove crab in Ilha Grande, PI. Interviews were conducted with crab gatherers and transporters to obtain information about harvesting, landed volume, market price and destination of commercialized crab. The main capture spots were located at the Maranhão part of the Parnaíba River Delta. Crab gatherers are active 5.07 times a week and spend an average of 6 hours in mangrove. The average number of crabs collected per gatherer/day was 77.0. The quantity landed in daytime period was 63,628 crabs/month, totalizing 714,543 crabs/ year. The average price traded was USD 0.19/crab. The production chain
The rocky shores of Praia Grande, in Ubatuba (São Paulo, Brazil), are formed by rock and Sabellaridae polychaete sandy reefs. These microenvironments offer shelters and foraging areas for several marine organisms and attracts many tourists. The crab Eriphia gonagra (Fabricius, 1781) inhabits these structures and can be used as a bioindicator, since they may be affected by anthropogenic actions. This study evaluated the stomach contents and characterized the feeding habits of an E. gonagra population, inhabiting the rocky shores from Praia Grande, taking into account the sex, size, and microhabitat. Monthly samplings were performed in 1996 and 1997 and the crabs were manually captured on the rocky surface or into of the sand reefs. So, the specimens sampled were characterized according to their capture site (microhabitat) as rocky (RO) or sand reef (SR). The most abundant food items were Mollusca, algae, Polychaeta, and Crustacea, being observed the importance of these groups as a nutritive resource in the studied environment. Mollusks were more abundant in the stomachs of crabs sampled on the rocks, while the other items increased in the sand reefs crabs. In the specimens sampled in the SR, polychaetes were the item food more common, indicating that this biotope is also used as a rich source of protein. The proportion of items differed also between size classes. Knowledge of such habits is essential for nutritional requirements studies, monitoring relationships among organisms, as well as assessing future environmental impacts in consolidated coastal regions.
