The larvicidal activity of the essential oils from leaves of five species of Lippia (L. alba, L. aff. gracilis, L. gracilis, L. microphylla and L. nodiflora) was studied on third instar larvae of Aedes aegypti. The larvae were exposed to serial concentrations from 500 to 12.5 μg/mL of the essential oils. The results indicate that the oil of L. gracilis has a higher larvicidal activity with a LC 50 of 26.3 μg/mL The results suggest the use of these essential oils as natural larvicidal agents.

Recebido em 12/2/09; aceito em 30/7/09; publicado na web em 21/1/10The new iridoid glucoside 10-O-vanilloyl-geniposidic acid has been isolated from the aerial parts of Alibertia myrciifolia along with hydroxyhopanone, 3a,22-dihydroxyhopane, ursolic acid, luteolin-3´,4´-dimethyl ether, caffeic acid and geniposidic acid. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined by means of mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral analyses. The antifungal activities of the iridoids 10-O-vanilloyl-geniposidic acid and geniposidic acid were evaluated against the phytopathogenic fungi strains Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium solani and Aspergillus niger.

Leaves of Aegiphila lhotzkiana growing in the north-east of Brazil were submitted to hydrodistillation and analysed by GC-MS. The essential oil was characterized by high amounts of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (87.0%), of which β β β β β-caryophyllene (27.5%), α α α α α-copaene (12.1%), caryophyllene oxide (10.5%) were predominant. Monoterpenes were represented only by oxygenated compounds, but in minor percentages (4.3%). This is the first report of any essential oil from Aegiphila species.
