This work aims to study the impacts of climate change in the subtropical mangroves during the late-Holocene on a southern Brazilian coastal plain and discuss the environmental conditions to the mangrove establishment near the austral limit of South America mangroves. Samples were collected to study palynological groups, sedimentary facies, and geochemistry analyses (δ13C, δ15N, TOC, TN, C:N ratio, TS, and C:S ratio), synchronized with four radiocarbon ages. The main result of this research was the mangrove succession, divided into three palynological zones composing two facies association: (1) herbaceous tidal flat and (2) mangrove tidal flat. The first zone between at least ~1815 and ~1629 cal. yr BP was marked by the mangrove absence with marine particulate organic carbon, C3 terrestrial plants, and macrophytes organic matter influence with δ13C values between −26.7‰ and −20‰, δ15N values x̅ = 3.5‰ and C:N around 21.8. The second zone between ~1629 and ~853 cal. yr BP was marked by the mangrove establishment represented only by Laguncularia pollen under influence of estuarine organic matter (δ13C x̅ = −26.5‰; δ15N x̅ = 3.2‰, and C:N around 16.4). The third zone reveals an increase of Laguncularia and presence of Avicennia pollen since ~853 cal. yr BP. Near the surface (<10 cm) occurs Rhizophora pollen, indicating the establishment of this genus during the past decades, under the modern environmental condition (δ13C x̅ = −27.02‰; δ15N x̅ = 3.12‰, and C:N around 17.42). This mangrove vertical succession may be associated with the low-temperature tolerance, where the sequence Rhizophora, Avicennia, and Laguncularia occurs from the northern to the southern limits of Santa Catarina coast, respectively, reflecting the temperature gradient. Therefore, probably, the establishment of the mangrove assemblage identified along the studied pollen profile was influenced by a temperature increase of air and water during the late-Holocene and, considering the Rhizophora genus, only during the past decades.

Abstract:The Atlantic Coast Restinga is a mosaic of plant communities with a distinct floristic and phytophysiognomy, exposed to luminous, thermal, and saline stresses. Plants of the restinga must have special features commonly associated to xeric environments, and are expected to host a high diversity of galling herbivores. We studied gall morphotypes, and recorded the diversity of galls on plants growing in sand dunes in a remnant area of restinga (Acaraí State Park) in São Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The sampling was done in four plots (250 x 5 m), constituting a total area of 5 000 m², during April, May and June. Plant branches (n ≥ 5) with galls were sampled, identified, and the galls were photographed. The galls were classified into eight morphotypes, associated to eight host plants constituting 15 host plants -galling herbivores systems. The identification of the gall -inducers was based on literature, and on the species-specific feature of this kind of host plant-gall inducers interaction. There was a predominance of leaf galls, green in color. The most common morphotypes were the globoid, lenticular, conical, rosette, marginal, and fusiform galls, similarly to the inventories performed on other Brazilian biomes. Despite the environmental stresses, the xeric features of the dunes of the ASP, and the high local plant diversity, the diversity of galling herbivores were low. Varronia curassavica (Boraginaceae), Smilax campestris (Smilacaceae), and Guapira opposita (Nyctaginaceae) were superhosts of galling herbivores in the dunes, with about 70 % of the total associated parasites. The environmental effect seems to be neutral, either for the host plants or for the generation of gall morphotypes. Alternatively, the scarce nutritional resources could be restrictive for the establishment of the galling herbivores inside plant tissues. Rev. Biol. Trop. 63 (4): 959-970. Epub 2015 December 01.

Trabalhos com testemunhos biológicos têm se tornado uma grande ferramenta para o entendimento do modo de vida de populações pretéritas. O presente estudo objetiva identificar taxonomicamente as espécies vegetais utilizadas preteritamente e classificadas como artefatos de origem fibrosa. Os artefatos foram coletados em perfil exposto do sítio, salvaguardados no acervo do Museu Arqueológico de Sambaqui de Joinville (MASJ), analisados por métodos padrões de anatomia vegetal e identificados por comparação com coleção de referência da flora atual do entorno do sítio arqueológico. As fibras foram identificadas como pertencentes a plantas do gênero Philodendron (Araceae), as quais são conhecidas popularmente por cipós e podem ter tido diversos usos. A ocorrência desses vegetais no sítio arqueológico sugere a presença de florestas circundantes e condições paleoecológicas similares às atuais.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the leaf morphology of 57 tree species to determine if there is a dominant leaf pattern in a remnant of the Araucaria Forest, Curitiba, PR, Brazil that can be used as ecological indicator of this forest. We also determined the quantitative morphological and anatomical traits of all species, distributed in 4 different strata, to identify a dominant leaf type of each stratum, regarding light exposure. Thirty mature leaves were collected for each species and were classified morphologically. Leaf area and size, dry mass, specific leaf area, stomata density, total thickness of leaf blade, epidermis, palisade, and spongy parenchyma thickness were also analyzed. Leaves with entire margin, acuminate apex, and microphyllous were predominant among the studied species. All of them presented hypostomatic leaves, except Araucaria angustifolia. All 57 species presented thin leaves and high specific leaf area, indicating mesophyll, characteristic of rain forests as observed in studies in similar dense forests. Low light intensity, in understory species, appears to be determinant of leaf morphology and anatomy differences, associated to high rainfall and relatively low temperature of the study area, both being the characteristics of this Atlantic Forest formation. Considering the results, no specific leaf pattern for the Araucaria Forest was found. Only the lowest stratum showed more differences comparing with the others, and no specific leaf trait could be correlated to light exposure in the present study.

Fatores ambientais podem promover alterações nas características funcionais e estruturais dosorganismos a eles expostos. Essa capacidade de variação na fisiologia ou morfologia é conhecidacomo plasticidade. Em ambientes heterogêneos como a restinga as espécies apresentam grande potencial plástico. O presente trabalho visa avaliar a plasticidade morfológica de Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess. (Calophyllaceae), popularmente conhecido como olandi,em duas formações de restinga do Parque Estadual Acaraí, localizado no município de São Francisco do Sul/SC (48º33’ W e 26º17’ S). Em cada formação, cinco indivíduos adultos foram selecionados para coleta de folhas de sol e amostras de caule, além da coleta de solo para obtenção de valores nutricionais e de fertilidade. Atributos foliares e de xilema, qualitativos e quantitativos, foram obtidos por meio de material herborizado e preparações histológicas permanentes, respectivamente. Observaram-se diferenças estatísticas significativas para os parâmetros de área foliar, massa seca e índice de condutividade entre as populações.Com base nos dados obtidos, sugere-se que os indivíduos presentes na restinga arbustivoarbórea estão mais sombreados e têm mais biomassa foliar acumulada, enquanto na floresta de transição C. brasiliense apresenta maior investimento em altura e diâmetro do caule. Verificou-se maior plasticidade fenotípica para os parâmetros de massa seca foliar e área foliar. Os parâmetros nutricionais demonstraram alto teor de matéria orgânica na floresta detransição, propiciando alto nível de fertilidade.

RESUMO Analisou-se a plasticidade morfoanatômica foliar de Smilax campestris (Smilacaceae) em distintas formações de restinga, em gradiente ambiental na planície costeira de São Francisco do Sul, SC, Brasil. De cada um dos vinte indivíduos selecionados por formação, foram coletadas folhas completamente expandidas, totalizando 140 folhas por ambiente destinadas à caracterização morfoanatômica. A heterogeneidade ambiental foi caracterizada pela nutrição do solo e radiação luminosa. Os dados foram avaliados por meio de ANOVA e PCA. Todos os atributos foliares analisados, bem como as variáveis ambientais, apresentaram diferença estatisticamente significativa entre as formações de restinga, com destaque aos atributos de massas seca e fresca, área foliar, área específica foliar, espessura da epiderme abaxial e densidade foliar. As variáveis ambientais de maior destaque foram: matéria orgânica, saturação por base, soma de bases e teor de magnésio. Os ajustes morfoanatômicos de S. campestris em resposta às distintas condições ambientais resultaram no uso de folhas esclerófilas e com características xeromórficas mais acentuadas próximo ao mar que se tornam gradativamente menores rumo ao continente.

Resumo A baía da Babitonga possui um patrimônio arqueológico riquíssimo, constituído por um conjunto numeroso de sambaquis, relacionados a pescadores-caçadores-coletores pré-coloniais. O projeto em desenvolvimento volta-se para um sambaqui localizado sob uma gruta no litoral leste de São Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brasil: o sambaqui sob rocha Casa de Pedra. O sítio apresenta camada arqueológica de 38 cm de espessura e área de 27 m2, e vem sendo escavado desde 2015, com rebaixamento em níveis artificiais de 5 cm de profundidade, em 30 setores de 1 x 1 m. A matriz é composta predominantemente por fragmentos ósseos de ictiofauna e por material conquiológico. Foram encontrados ossos humanos esparsos, alguns queimados, nas primeiras camadas. Osso humano e conchas a 3 cm e 20-25 cm de profundidade apresentaram datação de 4.460 ± 30 e 5.470 ± 30 anos AP, respectivamente. Porém, datações do sedimento da base do sítio apresentaram 4.330 ± 700 e 5.670 ± 850 anos AP, levando-nos a questionar a origem da matriz arqueológica e a sua posição em contexto temporal. Nas paredes internas da gruta, verificaram-se pinturas rupestres, que, após resultados mais concretos, poderão ser o primeiro registro no estado deste tipo de manifestação associada a sambaquis.
