A concorrência é observada em todos os mercados, de maneira especial nos últimos anos também no Ensino Superior. A necessidade de maior profissionalização e competência gerencial nas Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES), proporciona por sua vez, a conquista de vantagens competitivas frente às demais organizações. O modelo de Cadeia de Valor originalmente proposto por Porter (1989), é uma estrutura composta por dois conjuntos de atividades, que integradas possibilitam à organização potencializar sua margem. A complexidade das atividades operacionais de uma Instituição de Ensino, intensiva em mão de obra qualificada, permite refletir a cerca de modelos e estruturas capazes de auxiliarem no oferecimento de ensino qualificado. Para o desenvolvimento desse estudo, o método utilizado foi a abordagem qualitativa e exploratória, utilizando procedimentos técnicos do tipo fontes secundárias e levantamentos bibliográficos sobre o assunto. Como resultado deste estudo é apresentado um modelo de cadeia de valor para uma Instituição de Ensino Superior.
