Background: Recent studies have identified potential beneficial effects of eating nuts, most of which have substantial amounts of monounsaturated fats. Macadamia nuts are 75% fat by weight, 80% of which is monounsaturated.
Yolk deposited by Japanese quail was abnormal for 24 hours after the oral administration of a single capsule containing 200 milligrams of bunker C oil. Both the structure and the staining properties of the yolk were affected. Fewer eggs were laid during the 4 days after dosing, compared to controls, and hatchability was drastically reduced. Hatchability returned to normal in 4 days. Three other reference oils also affected yolk structure. Canada geese given 2 grams and chickens given 500 milligrams of bunker C oil produced eggs with abnormal yolk rings.
Summary
Spur‐winged geese at Barberspan, an agricultural area in South Africa, had an average carcass composition of 64% water, 22% protein, 6% lipid, 6% minerals and 2% carbohydrate with an energy content of 21.6 kJ g‐1 DW. There were significant changes during the year in protein and lipid levels; they were lowest during the annual flightless wing moult. Protein and lipid levels also declined during breeding but this event had less effect on body reserves than moulting. The relationships between various body measurements and mineral content of the carcass (as an estimate of skeletal weight) were examined.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
