* Une première version de ce texte devait paraître en portugais, à côté d'autres articles émanant pour la plupart d'animateurs du programme ESF (cf. 1. et note 1) et/ou des projets qui ont suivi. Elle n'a jamais été publiée et a seulement circulé parmi quelques amis et étudiants. Elle tentait déjà d'intégrer des commentaires et remarques de M.-T. Vasseur, que je tiens à nouveau à remercier, ainsi que les lecteurs anonymes qui m'ont amené, entre autres, à clarifier ici ou là mon propos. Les quelques autres modifications tentent de tenir compte du nouveau contexte de publication. Jo Arditty 20 telles que qui parle à qui, à propos de quoi, dans quelles circonstances… ? sont étrangères à ce type d'approche, qui ne nous concernera pas. Mais il ne s'agit là que de l'une des manières d'envisager le langage comme système. D'autres prennent davantage en compte le fait que le langage sert à référer à des personnes, des objets, des lieux, des moments, à indiquer comment on se situe par rapport à eux, à enchaîner ces références, ces prédications, ces jugements… pour en faire des textes. Reste que chercher à décrire la langue comme système, fût-elle celle de l'apprenant, suppose un tri dans les données, une idéalisation qui risque d'évacuer l'aspect social de l'activité langagière, faite de reprises, d'échos, de réactions, et du coup de ne même pas donner une description correcte de ce qui, dans la langue, permet cette polyphonie et cette réactivité. Avant d'entrer dans le vif du sujet, j'essaierai de rendre sensible cette divergence à partir d'un exemple de différence de relation aux données.
