On the basis of a monthly sampling effort from March 2005 to February 2006, the total concentrations of the sums of 27 and 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (defined as sigma27PAHs and sigma15PAHs, respectively) in riverine runoff of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China, and associated fluxes were determined. No clear temporal and spatial trends of PAH concentrations were found at all eight riverine runoff outlets where the samples were collected. The annual fluxes of sigma27PAHs and sigma15PAHs from the PRD to the coastal ocean were 60.2 and 33.9 metric tons, respectively. Assuming that riverine flux was positively related to the regional emission of PAHs, the annual riverine fluxes from five major rivers in China to the global oceans were estimated, which are quite significant relative to other major rivers of the world. On the basis of mass balance considerations, approximately 87% of sigma15PAHs inputting to the Pearl River Estuary and northern South China Sea was derived from riverine runoff from the PRD. In addition, approcimately 22.3 metric tons of sigma15PAHs annually outflow to open seas, which is equivalent to a concentration of 0.34 pg/L in the global oceans if the PAHs are evenly distributed in the upper 200 m of the water column. A comparison with the global background level of PAHs indicated that approximately 0.4% of PAHs in the open oceans may have been contributed by 1-year discharge from the PRD.
N 6-methyladenosine (m 6 A) is the most prevalent modification in eukaryotic RNAs. The biological importance of m 6 A relies on m 6 A readers, which control mRNA fate and function. However, it remains unexplored whether additional regulatory subunits of m 6 A readers are involved in the m 6 A recognition on RNAs. Here we discover that the long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) LINC00266-1 encodes a 71-amino acid peptide. The peptide mainly interacts with the RNA-binding proteins, including the m 6 A reader IGF2BP1, and is thus named "RNAbinding regulatory peptide" (RBRP). RBRP binds to IGF2BP1 and strengthens m 6 A recognition by IGF2BP1 on RNAs, such as c-Myc mRNA, to increase the mRNA stability and expression of c-Myc, thereby promoting tumorigenesis. Cancer patients with RBRP high have a poor prognosis. Thus, the oncopeptide RBRP encoded by LINC00266-1 is a regulatory subunit of m 6 A readers and strengthens m 6 A recognition on the target RNAs by the m 6 A reader to exert its oncogenic functions.
The mediorostral neostriatum/hyperstriatum ventrale (MNH) and neostriatum dorsocaudale (Ndc) of the domestic chick are crucially involved in auditory filial imprinting, whereas the lobus parolfactorius (LPO) seems to be involved in the emotional modulation of behavior. Because there is evidence that MNH and Ndc are akin to higher association areas in mammals, the present study evaluates the dopaminergic and thalamic input to these areas, as well as to the avian caudate/putamen homologue LPO, by using retrograde pathway tracing, together with dopamine (DA) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry. By combining DA immunohistochemistry with retrograde fluorescent tracing, we demonstrated that dopaminergic afferents to the MNH and Ndc arise mainly from the area ventralis, whereas the main dopaminergic input to the LPO arises from the substantia nigra. The main thalamic input to the MNH and LPO arises from the dorsal thalamic nuclei, n. dorsomedialis anterior and n. dorsolateralis anterior, whereas the thalamic input to the Ndc arises from the n. dorsolateralis posterior and n. subrotundus. Furthermore, there are reciprocal intratelencephalic connections between distinct parts of the neostriatum caudale and the mediorostral neostriatum. DA-immunoreactive (ir) fibers are present at moderate densities in the MNH and Ndc and at high densities in the LPO. At the ultrastructural level, DA- and TH-ir axon terminals in the MNH and Ndc form predominantly symmetric synaptic contacts with dendritic shafts, which are often situated in close vicinity to unstained terminals. These results indicate that the general organization of dopaminergic afferents to the chick telecephalon is similar to that of the mesotelencephalic dopaminergic subsystems in mammals such as the mesostriatal and mesolimbocortical DA system.
Sources, compositions, and historical records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediment cores collected from the Yellow Sea and the South China Sea were analyzed to investigate the influence of anthropogenic activities. The occurrence of PAHs was mainly derived from various combustion sources, especially the combustion of biomass and domestic coal. Uniform composition of sedimentary PAHs (52−62% of phenanthrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene) suggested air-borne mixtures intractable to degradation. The concentrations of the sum of 15 PAHs (16 priority pollutants designed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency minus naphthalene; designed as Σ 15 PAH) in Yellow Sea sediment cores were generally higher than those in the South China Sea. The profiles of Σ 15 PAH concentrations recorded in the sediment cores closely followed historical socioeconomic development in China. In general, Σ 15 PAH concentrations started to increase from the background pollution level posed by agricultural economy at the turn of 20th century. In addition, a Σ 15 PAH concentration reduction was observed during the Chinese Civil War (1946−1949) and Great Cultural Revolution (1966−1976, suggesting them as setbacks for economic development in Chinese history. Increasing PAH emissions as a result of increasing coal combustion associated with the rapid urbanization and industrialization since the implementation of the Reform and Open Policy (since 1978) accounted for the fast growth of Σ 15 PAH concentrations in sediment cores. The decline of Σ 15 PAH concentrations from subsurface maximum until sampling time was inconsistent with current-day economic development in China, and may possibly suggest emission reductions due to decreasing proportional use of domestic coal and increasing consumption of cleaner energies (natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas).
