The phospholipid (PL) content was 4-fold higher while the triacylglycerol (TG) content tended to be 65% lower in human breast cancer tissues as compared with non-cancerous reference parts from excised breast tissues. The variation in TG content among breast tissues was very large while that of PL was relatively small. The fatty acid compositions of PL were significantly different between the cancer and reference tissues; the proportions of octadecenoate (18:1), docosahexaenoate (22:6n-3), the total n-3 fatty acids and the n-3/n-6 ratio, but not the proportion of arachidonate (20:4n-6), were significantly higher in the major PL of cancer tissues as compared with those of the reference tissues. No significant differences were observed in the proportion of the major fatty acids of TG in these tissues. The turnover of lipids was faster in the cancer tissues than in the reference tissues. The turnover of TG was faster than that of PL in the cancer tissues, whereas the opposite was true in the reference tissues, indicating significant differences in lipid metabolism between these tissues. A striking difference in the n-3 and n-6 fatty acids of the reference tissues noted for Japanese and Finnish women is discussed in relation to the roles of eicosanoids and eicosanoid precursors in mammary carcinogenesis.
There is a trend of increase in the number of Staphylococcus aureus infection recently, and postoperative enterocolitis due to methicillin resistant strains is appearing. Because of this, a nation wide questionnaire survey on postoperative enterocolitis was conducted to clarify the status since 1980. Of the 875 major surgical institutes to which we sent the questionnaire, 370 (42.3%) replied and 67 case reports were obtained from 25 institutes. Twenty published reports were added to this and a total of 87 cases were evaluable. The number of postoperative enterocolitis increased after the year 1985, and those resulting from MRSA infection were more frequent in the northern half of Japan including the Kanto area. It was more frequent in males and the mean age was 57.9. Their onset was sudden, beginning with diarrhea and/or fever between the second and fifth postoperative days. In most of the cases, the cephalosporin group of antibiotics, especially of the third generation, were administered preceding the enterocolitis. Six of cases (24%) did not survive, and in some of the institutes they were considered to be hospital infections, as they appeared consecutively between a short period of time.
An immunohistochemical analysis of the expression of Lewis(a), Lewis(b), and sialated Lewis(a) blood group antigens was performed on specimens of human non-involved stomach (n = 91), early gastric cancers (n = 41), and advanced gastric cancers (n = 50). In non-involved stomach, Lewis(a) and Lewis(b) were detected mainly in surface epithelium, although sialated Lewis(a) was scarcely expressed. These blood group-related antigens were rarely observed in deep glands. In gastric cancers, Lewis(a) showed a tendency to be expressed in well or moderately differentiated carcinomas, and this was observed to be more marked in advanced tumors. There was no obvious difference in positive ratios of Lewis(b) between degrees of differentiation of the cancers. Sialated Lewis(a) was not detected in early cancers, and its frequent expression in well- or moderately differentiated, advanced carcinomas suggested an association with both cancer differentiation and progression. These results indicate that knowledge of the expression of blood group antigens may help interpret the antigenic alterations occurring in the course of carcinogenesis, differentiation, and progression of gastric cancers.
of our six cases and may also have been present in the other two though these were not seen by the authors pre-operatively. Incision over this swelling reveals that it consistently and accurately identifies clot at the fracture site, thus facilitating repair, being preferable to the circumferential incision which is more frequently recommended'. When the fracture is repaired by this technique the penile swelling decreases rapidly and the skin healing is good with minimal scarring.Excellent results in five of our six cases emphasizes the importance of early surgical exploration since one of the two cases managed conservatively experiences some curvature of the penis on erection. Non-operative treatment results in 10 per cent incidence of penile deformity5 while none who had surgical repair developed this complication.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
