There is an urgent need for increased awareness about travel-related infectious diseases (especially malaria) among Korean travelers, and they should be encouraged to seek pretravel health information.
BackgroundPregnancy considerably alters cardiovascular dynamics, and thereby affects the transition of blood pressure after delivery in women. We aimed to analyze the association between parity and blood pressure in Korean adult women.MethodsWe included 8,890 women who participated in Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2010 and 2012. We divided the population according to the menopause status and analyzed the association between parity and blood pressure by using multiple regression analysis, and on hypertension, by using logistic regression analysis.ResultsSystolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly associated with parity in premenopausal women (β=-0.091 [P<0.001] and β=-0.069 [P<0.001], respectively). In the analysis that excluded women receiving antihypertensive medication, the systolic and diastolic blood pressure of postmenopausal women were significantly associated with parity (β=-0.059 [P=0.022] and β=-0.054 [P=0.044], respectively). Parity was found to prevent hypertension after adjustment for confounders in postmenopausal women (odds ratio, 0.55; 95% confidence interval, 0.310-0.985).ConclusionWe found that parity prevented hypertension in Korean women.
Even though plastic improved the human standard of living, handling the plastic waste represents an enormous challenge. It takes more than 100 years to decompose discarded or buried waste plastics. Microplastics are one of the causes of significantly pervasive environmental pollutants. The incineration of plastic waste generates toxic gases, underscoring the need for new approaches, in contrast to conventional strategies that are required for recycling plastic waste. Therefore, several studies have attempted to upcycle plastic waste into high value‐added products. Converting plastic waste into carbonaceous materials is an excellent upcycling technique due to their diverse practical applications. This review summarizes various studies dealing with the upcycling of plastic waste into carbonaceous products. Further, this review discusses the applications of carbonaceous products synthesized from plastic waste including carbon fibers, absorbents for water purification, and electrodes for energy storage. Based on the findings, future directions for effective upcycling of plastic waste into carbonaceous materials are suggested.
Metabolic surgery has been shown to provide better glycemic control for type 2 diabetes than conventional therapies. Still, the outcomes of the surgery are variable, and prognostic markers reflecting the metabolic changes by the surgery are yet to be established. NMR-based plasma metabolomics followed by multivariate regression was used to test the correlation between the metabolomic profile at 7-days after surgery and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels at 3-months (and up to 12 months with less patients), and to identify the relevant markers. Metabolomic profiles at 7-days could differentiate the patients according to the HbA1c improvement status at 3-months. The HbA1c values were predicted based on the metabolomics profile with partial least square regression, and found to be correlated with the observed values. Metabolite analysis suggested that 3-Hydroxybutyrate (3-HB) and glucose contributes to this prediction, and the [3-HB]/[glucose] exhibited a modest to good correlation with the HbA1c level at 3-months. The prediction of 3-month HbA1c using 7-day metabolomic profile and the suggested new criterion [3-HB]/[glucose] could augment current prognostic modalities and help clinicians decide if drug therapy is necessary.
To investigate the relationship between coagulation activities and the fibrinolytic system during normal pregnancy, we measured the plasma concentrations of coagulation factors, antithrombin III (AT III), D-dimer, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), total protein S (TPS), and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) in 436 apparently healthy pregnant, postpartum, and nonpregnant women. There were no significant changes in AT III, TPS, and factor XI concentrations during pregnancy and puerperium. However, factor VII, VIII, IX, and XII activities increased gradually as pregnancy progressed, reached maximum values in the third trimester, and returned to nonpregnant levels by 5-8 weeks postpartum. Plasma D-dimer levels in the third trimester of pregnancy were 1.23+/-0.42 micro g/ml, significantly higher than for the first trimester (0.34+/-0.16 micro g/ml, P<0.01). The tPA antigen levels averaged 1.8-fold higher in the late third trimester than in the first trimester; the plasma fibrinogen concentrations averaged 1.6-fold higher in the late third trimester than in the first trimester. Compared to the peak values during pregnancy, tPA levels averaged 39.8% lower and plasma fibrinogen concentrations averaged 40.0% lower at 5-8 weeks postpartum. The tPA levels correlated strongly with the plasma fibrinogen concentrations ( r=0.52, P<0.01). In short, this study shows that tPA levels change in parallel with plasma fibrinogen concentrations during and after normal pregnancy.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
