A repetitive electron beam driver based on 6-stage Linear Transformer Driver (LTD) cavities is presented. Each cavity consists of two Blumlein pulse forming networks (BPFNs) sharing a laser trigger switch. Voltage adding is obtained by means of Linear Transformer (LT) technology. The LTD cavity consists of two BPFNs connected in parallel, an LT with a ratio of 1:1, and a laser-triggered spark switch. The energy efficiency of a single LTD was investigated. The results show that the energy efficiency of an L-type BPFN and an LT was 94.3% and 92.8%, respectively. An electron beam driver consisting of 6 such cavities was developed with an output voltage of 740 kV, a current of 12.3 kA, and a power of 9.1 GW. The repetition frequency operation results show that the electron beam driver can operate stably for 20 s at 25 Hz with a jitter of approximately 1.7 ns.
With the development of high-power microwave technology, the output power of the pulse generator is required more and more higher. In this paper, it is realized by increasing the output power of the module while the output impedance of the module changes little. The module of the generator is based on pulse forming network (PFN) and linear transformer (LT). Four Blumlein PFNs with arc-type configuration and 24 Ω characteristic impedance were connected symmetrically to the primary coil of the LTD and driven by two identical laser triggered spark switches to ensure four Blumlein PFNs synchronizing operation. On this basis, a two-stage high-power pulse generator based on PFN-LT is developed. The following technical parameters of the generator were achieved on a 12 Ω high-power solid resistor: output voltage amplitude of ∼250 kV and output power of ∼5.2 GW at a repetition rate of 5 Hz.
A compact module for long-pulse power generator, based on Blumlein pulse forming network (PFN), was designed. Two Blumlein PFNs with L-type configuration and 20 Ω characteristic impedance were connected symmetrically to the primary coil of the linear transformer driver (LTD) and driven by an identical high voltage spark switch to ensure two Blumlein PFNs synchronizing operation. The output pulse of the module connected with 10 Ω water load is about 135 kV in amplitude and 200 ns in duration with a rise time of ∼50 ns and a flat top of ∼100 ns. On this basis, a repetitive long-pulse power generator based on PFN-LTD has been developed, which was composed of four modules. The following technical parameters of the generator were achieved on planar diode: output voltage amplitude of ∼560 kV, output current amplitude of ∼10 kA at a repetition rate of 25 Hz. The generator operates stable and outputs more than 10(4) pulses. Meanwhile, the continuous operating time of the generator is up to 60 s.
