Plastic, widely used as a material for contemporary art, get damaged as directly exposed to temperature, humidity, ultra violet, etc. And it is very quickly damaged in early time, once damaged, it can't recover into original state. But like this characteristics, there is a few advanced research in Korea. So this study deal with a rising value of plastic artifacts in other country, United Kingdom and France, current conservation state, identification and cleaning method. Also 5 types of cleaners(distilled water, ethanol, acetone, eraser) and adhesives(cyanoacrylate, epoxy, acrylic, chloroprene rubber) were evaluated by produced plastics(PVC, PE, PP, PS, PU). As a result of experiment, ethanol and acetone that were previous evaluated in other research performed in other country are the best cleaner. Result of degradation
Gold threads mean thread made by metal, it is composed various material to gold leaf, adhesive and media. The making technique and using materials of Gold threads are different from region, it can be used to distinguish country of origin. So this study finds characteristics and making techniques for flat gold threads of relics. Standard samples are made of animal glue, lacquer, red lacquer and etc. This materials are based on the scientific investigation of cultural gold threads properties. Then traditional techniques were estimated by comparison and analysis of actual cultural properties and standard samples. As a result of investigating cultural properties, it is similar to the standard sample which are mixed with red soil additives. After analysis of SEM-EDS, it is detected to Al, Si, Fe. So it is to the conclusion that traditional gold thread is made of adhesive mixed with red soil to improve gold color better. And this ways are similar
The metal component of Chinese and Korean traditional gold thread was analyzed nondestructively using P-XRF and classified morphologically. In the nondestructive analysis of 22 Chinese and Korean artifacts, there were 10 gold threads made up of Au in China and 7 in Korea; in addition, there were 4 silver threads made up of Ag in Korea and 1 copper thread made up of Cu in China. In the morphological classification, 7 gilt paper strips were confirmed in China and Korea and 4 wrapped threads were identified in China and Korea. Zn, Sn and Fe (minor components of the threads) were detected. These components were assumed to be transferred from the metal found in burial goods.
Plastic has been widely used in modern artworks' materials due to its merits of process ability and mass production. In the country, value of plastic artifact is increasing but the field of plastic study is limited to industrial purpose. In this study, Identification methods of plastic were performed by SPME-GC/MS and pyrolysis-GC/MS using trace of samples. As a result of identification using SPME-GC/MS, aromatic compounds were identified from polyvinyl chloride. And alkane compounds were identified from polyethylene, and polypropylene. Aromatic compounds were identified from polystyrene, and diethylene glycol appeared in polyurethane based on polyester was identified from polyurethane. As a result of identification using pyrolysis-GC/MS, aliphatic alkenes compounds and phthalate(DEHP) were identified from polyvinyl chloride. Aliphatic alkenes compounds and phthalate(DIBP) were detected from polyethylene. 1-hexene, etc., were detected from polypropylene, aromatic compounds were identified from polystyrene, and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate which is polyurethane basic material was confirmed from polyurethane. This study suggested that non-destructive SPME and pyrolysis-GC/MS are useful to identify compounds particularly polystyrene and polyurethane. Animal glue is a natural adhesive made from processed skins or bones of animals. It is widely used in wooden crafts, papercrafts, dancheong painting, and pictures. Accurate evaluation of the quality of animal glues during production and use is difficult because there is no formal method for testing the glue's properties during pretreatment and measurement conditions. Thus, in this study, a series of tests were carried out by changing the conditions of swelling, temperature, and concentration of animal glue and gelatin sold on the market. Twelve types of animal glues were evaluated, having a viscosity range of 12.67 cP to 29.43 cP. The results showed that the physical characteristics of the glues were stable when allowed to swell for six h in distilled water(23℃). When 10%(by weight in distilled water) of the animal glue was measured in the reflective mode of a spectrophotometer, the optical characteristics of the glues were stable. Powdered animal glues have a medium brightness and middle-high chroma. Relative to powdered glues, stick animal glues have a low brightness and a medium chroma. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that the data can be assembled into a form so that animal glue workers can use it as a reference for the preparation of evaluation standards for testing the characteristics of animal glues.
