Las personas con discapacidad enfrentan enormes desafíos para realizar actividades normales y vitales. El transporte es uno de estos obstáculos que diariamente desafía a las personas con discapacidad. En países en vía de desarrollo como Colombia, esta situación es peor debido a que la infraestructura con ascensores, rampas y transporte público especial para discapacitados es baja o inexistente. A pesar de que este tipo de vehículos ya existen en el mercado, sus precios no son asequibles en lugares como Colombia debido a los costos de importación. En un esfuerzo por mejorar las condiciones de esta población, se propuso desarrollar un triciclo para discapacitados utilizando componentes locales y tecnología asequible para uso masivo. Para el desarrollo de este prototipo se utilizó la metodología clásica de diseño mecánico propuesta por Shigley. En las evaluaciones preliminares el prototipo muestra un buen equilibrio en ergonomía, funcionalidad y costo.
