A book review of Tragic Vision and Divine Compassion
This article discusses the comparison between the concepts of speaking in tongues inPentecostal theology and the concept of Rede in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. The thesis of this article was that the concept of speaking in tongues in Pentecostal theology had many similarities to the concept of Rede in Heidegger's philosophy. The similarities were found in the characters in both concepts, which were communicative, intelligible, revealing and both were authentic human characters (Dasein). Nevertheless, the concept of speaking in tongues in Pentecostal theology had a uniqueness over the concept of Rede in Heidegger's philosophy, because it encompassed not only the human rationality, but also the realm of faith. In this article it was shown that the two concepts influenced and enriched each other. This comparative study also yielded some conceptual contributions to both Pentecostal theology and Heidegger's philosophy, which were also useful for dealing with the criticisms raised against both.
This paper proposes a model of pastoral care in the pandemic era which is inspired by the concepts of decreation and attention in Simone Weil’s thinking. Decreation and attention are two important concepts in Weil's theological thought. Decreation in Weil's thought can be interpreted as denial of oneself so that the other can be revealed. The concept of decreation is inspired by God's act of withdrawal, which He did so that all creation could exist. Decreation manifests in attention, by emptying oneself, and being ready to be fully open to the disclosure of the other. Using Weil’s two concepts, this paper proposes “decreational ministry.” In this model, the church is no longer focused on pastoral ministries that are “creating” forms of service that attract many congregations to come to church, but instead focuses on placing other people or the congregation as the center of pastoral care. Decreational ministry thus has three characteristics: (1) space-giving, (2) friendly, (3) “empty” and “silent.”
So far, Pentecostal eschatology has always been connected with dispensational premillennialist views. But if analyzed, there are actually many things in dispensational premillennialism that are incompatible with Pentecostal theology. This article will briefly explain the history of how Pentecostal eschatology can be influenced by dispensational premillennialism, as well as providing criticisms that prove that this view actually does not correspond essentially with Pentecostal teaching. This article will also try to propose a model of conditional postmillennialism, which is seen as more appropriate to become a framework of Pentecostal eschatology.
The concept of the Coincidentia Oppositorum is a major theme in the thinking of Nicholas of Cusa. Cusa's thinking has undergone several changes in several of his works, in connection with the influences of negative theology, humanism, scholasticism, nominalism, and the philosophy of Neo-Platonism. Nevertheless, Coincidentia Oppositorum is still a central theme in all of Cusa's work. Starting in the 18th century until the present, thinkers believe that Cusa's thoughts on the Coincidentia Oppositorum deserve to be reappointed as an academic discussion. Some thinkers have even linked Cusa's theological concept with secular sciences. Based on this background, this paper was written to describe Cusa's thoughts on the Coincidentia Oppositorum, then analyze the contribution of these thoughts to the integration of theology with sciences such as mathematics, science, psychology, and philosophy. The thesis of this paper is that Cusa's thought regarding the Coincidentia Oppositorum is still relevant to be discussed today, it can even provide a unio oppositorum between theology and other sciences.
