Résumé En s’appuyant sur une enquête consacrée aux conditions d’hébergement des demandeurs d’asile, cet article vise à rendre compte des enjeux que sou lève, du côté des professionnels et des bénévoles, la prise en charge de publics qui, à plusieurs égards, leur apparaissent comme des usagers atypiques. Parmi les éléments dont font état les acteurs de l’accueil, et qui tendraient à déstabiliser la relation d’aide telle qu’ils l’abordent habituelle ment, figurent un certain nombre de caractéristiques comportementales qu’ils attribuent à des variables touchant à l’origine sociale ou culturelle des personnes accueillies. Mais plus fondamentalement, il semble que soient en cause, dans l’embarras que beaucoup ressentent face aux demandeurs d’asile, les particularités du statut de ces derniers au regard de la législation. La relation d’aide est en effet suspendue à l’issue de la procédure de demande d’asile et privée de la plupart des outils que mobilisent habituellement les intervenants sociaux lorsqu’ils visent l’insertion sociale et professionnelle de leur public. Reste alors, pour les accueillants, à assumer le poids de la contradiction entre la compassion que suscitent les récits dramatiques que livrent les personnes accueillies et la suspicion que manifestent les autorités à l’égard de demandeurs d’asile dont moins de 20 % sont reconnus comme réfugiés.
