Este estudo apresenta um relato sobre o percurso de uma família, cujo filho é surdo e recém-implantado. Com dois anos de idade, a criança foi matriculada em uma instituição de Educação Infantil da rede particular e teve o suporte de uma acompanhante terapêutica (AT), além de suas professoras. Como fonte de dados, foram utilizados os registros do diário de campo da AT, que reúnem observações e estratégias feitas na escola, conversas dos interlocutores da criança e uma entrevista com a mãe. Os relatos foram analisados na perspectiva dos estudos de Vygotsky, ressaltando o papel do mediador no desenvolvimento do sujeito, e considerando o seu entorno interacional, fundamental na construção de saberes. Este estudo revela como a família avançou, de um início marcado pela negação da condição do filho na escola, para a busca de alternativas que normatizassem, restabelecessem a fala da criança e que, finalmente, fizessem os pais o reconhecerem como surdo.
