Après des décennies, voire des siècles de marginalisation dans l'université et le monde du savoir, l'image, et avec elle le langage analogique 1 , sont devenus à la fois des objets d'étude, des moyens d'apprentissage et un langage participant à la communication du savoir (il devient problématique de faire une conférence qui ne soit plus appuyée par des éléments visuels, PowerPoint ou autres 2). L'image <620> fut longtemps marginalisée dans les milieux où la « vraie » culture était principalement littéraire. L'objet de connaissance, c'était exclusivement le livre. Cette inclinaison fut doublement renforcée : par la découverte de l'imprimerie à la Renaissance, et par la redécouverte de la Bible à la Réforme, le premier phénomène contribuant d'ailleurs au succès du second. Pourtant, on sait depuis longtemps que l'image ou ce qui se donne à voir, sont objet de connaissance autant que l'écrit qui se donne à lire ou la parole qui se donne à entendre et à comprendre (en revanche le son s'entend, mais doit être appréhendé comme une image sonore). Il suffit de rappeler que malgré son insistance sur le Sola scriptura, l'image a largement été utilisée pour la diffusion des idées de la Réforme, en contexte luthérien tout au moins 3. Avec parfois, une résonnance au moins égale, sinon supérieure à l'écrit. Goethe, qui est sans doute l'un des meilleurs représentants d'une pensée humaniste liée à la redécouverte des sources antiques-mais aussi d'une culture protestante humaniste-, apprenait autant en regardant qu'en lisant ; il découvrait le monde par la contemplation d'oeuvres d'art et l'observation d'objets de la nature autant que par la lecture de la littérature, antique ou plus contemporaine. Nous assistons depuis quelques années à une inflation de la symbolique religieuse dans la publicité. Dans cet article l'auteur montre, en analysant les différentes fonctions du discours publicitaire, comment celui-ci se nourrit des archétypes qui habitent encore l'imaginaire contemporain. Proposant de prendre au sérieux l'expression du sacré dans la publicité, il invite à porter sur elle un regard critique et ludique, en même temps qu'à l'utiliser au profit d'une compréhension renouvelée du discours religieux.
La lutte contre les idoles et la valorisation du second commandement du Décalogue ont masqué un élément important de la théologie de Calvin : elle est ouverte à l’esthétique. Sa pensée de Dieu revendique constamment la beauté et l’oeuvre d’art, cités en tant que métaphores. Cette esthétique s’exprime dans sa théologie de la création et dans celle des sacrements. Elle est supportée par une pensée différenciée des signes, éléments à la fois linguistiques et plastiques, qui constitue les prémices de ce que l’on découvrira dans la sémiologie moderne.
