The present crisis of electricity supply in Nigeria is adversely affecting its economy. The population is growing and life is getting more difficult for the citizens. Nigeria is rich in renewable energy sources, such as solar, biomass, thermal, wind, geothermal, tidal, hydro, biogas, wave, and ocean energy. However, less than 25% of the renewable energy potentials have been utilized. A critical investment in a renewable energy sector will not only solve electricity related problems but also help to achieve social-economy development in the country. In addition, renewable energy projects will help to provide jobs for the youth and create new investment opportunities for the people.
Recently, the demand for electric power supply has tremendously increased and the Nigerian government is unable to meet this demand, with conventional energy generation, due to myriads of issues in the electricity sector. A 2 MW grid-integrated solar photovoltaic system design is carried out in this work using Idofian, Kwara State, Nigeria, as a case study. The feasibility study for the Solar PV system along with the load estimation for the study area were done using RETScreen software. The simulation results revealed that the design is feasible for Idofian township, with an annual energy yield of roughly 2,853 MWh, of about 17% of Idofian's annual (daily) electricity consumption. Solar PV electricity generation saves around 1,182.7 tonnes of CO2. The plan, if adopted, will go a long way toward alleviating Nigeria's electricity shortage.
NCAM motorized coconut dehusking machine was tested for its performance. The objective of the test is to optimize the dehusking performance of the machine. Different sizes of coconut fruits were fed into the machine and the time taken for each fruit to be dehusked was noted. A total number of 60 matured Badagry coconuts from Lagos State, Nigeria were dehusked with the machine. The performance evaluation shows that the efficiency of the machine was 90.1% while the average capacity is 122 coconuts per hour. The percentage number of distorted and broken coconuts was 10% and 0% respectively. Hence, the machine is suitable and recommended for small, medium and large scale coconut processors.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
