An observational analysis was conducted in five different cities in Eastern Amazonia, in order to detect the breeze circulations in the region. The frequency of wind direction, wind speed, and precipitation was analyzed along with estimated spatio-temporal rainfall through the Climate Prediction Center Morphing Technique (CMORPH). The results show different types of breezes that occur in these cities, with regular time from 0900-2100 UTC for SB (sea breeze), 0000-0900 UTC for LB (land breeze), and 1200-0000 UTC for RB (river breeze). The SB has been shown to be more frequent from September to November (SON), while the LB is more prominent from March to May (MAM). However, the RB highlights throughout the whole year in Belém. The hour of occurrence of the SB circulation and the precipitation along the coast has shown a relationship.
Variability in precipitation patterns in the northeast and southeast regions of Brazil are complex, and the combined effects of the Tropical Atlantic, Pacific Niños, and local characteristics influence the precipitation rates. This study assesses the performance of multi-satellite precipitation product SM2RAIN-Climate Change Initiative (SM2RAIN-CCI) for the period of 1998–2015 at monthly scale. To accomplish this aim, various statistical analyses and comparison of multi-satellite precipitation analysis products with rain gauge stations are carried out. In addition, we used three values corresponding to extreme events: The total daily precipitation (PRCPTOT) and the number of consecutive dry/wet days (CDD/CWD). Results reveal that monthly rainfall data from SM2RAIN-CCI are compatible with surface observations, showing a seasonal pattern typical of the region. Data correlate well with observations for the selected stations (r ≥ 0.85) but tend to overestimate high rainfall values (>80 mm/month) in the rainy area. There is a significant decrease in rainfall to the indices, especially in PRCPTOT during the occurrence of tropical ocean–atmosphere interactions, reflecting CWD and CDD values. Moreover, our findings also indicate a relationship, at interannual timescales, between the state of El Niño Southern-Oscillation (ENSO) and Tropical Atlantic (TA) annual precipitation variability from 1998 to 2015. The SM2RAIN-CCI could be a useful alternative for rain-gauge precipitation data in the São Francisco River basin.
ABSTRACTChanges in land use in tropical regions have become more frequent in recent decades, causing intense environmental and climatic changes. The general objective of the study is to analyze the deforestation and temporal patterns of climatic variables
Rainfall erosivity is one crucial factor that controls soil erosion. The interannual variability of rainfall erosivity in Brazilian Amazonia connected to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. This paper presents a study of the effects of Sea Surface Temperatures anomalies for El Niño region on rainfall erosivity in the Brazilian Amazonia. Rainfall erosivity across was assessed using 30 minutes rainfall data from Climate Prediction Center MORPHing technique during the period from 1998 to 2019. Results indicated that average rainfall erosivity is stronger during La Niña events and weaker during El Niño events. The annual value of rainfall erosivity ranged from 8241 to 24310 (Mj mm ha−1 h−1 year−1). Results also indicated that the effects of extending northward over Brazilian Amazonia showed a significant correlation (P <0.05) between annual rainfall erosivity and annual precipitation. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation conditions was determined to exert the most substantial influence on rainfall erosivity. This information would be useful in the implementation of new soil conservation strategies.
A B S T R A C TThis study investigates the temporal evolution of the precipitation regime for the Iriri river basin, and its relation with the vegetation growth cycle. Precipitation data based on CPC Morphing (CMORPH) and normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI) data by AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) are analyzed for the period June 2009 to May 2014. The results confirm that the annual precipitation cycle of the Iriri River basin is characterized by an intra-seasonal variation, which is resounded in the vegetation cover during the months. During the year with the occurrence of La Niña, the most extreme surpluses of monthly precipitation were observed in the middle of the rainy season (November to April). Although in the less rainy period precipitation totals may not be higher, the NDVI varies in sinusoidal form due to the seasonality of the region. Rainy seasons can be distinguished from rainy seasons that are not influenced by precipitation mechanisms by examining their monthly peak patterns. In addition, it was identified through the NDVI, that the less rainy period had little influence on the vegetative index during the occurrence of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomena. These results may have important implications for understanding the dynamics of water resources and natural provisions for a basin composed of protected areas. Keywords: Climatology, remote sensing, vegetation.
