Les moulins de Barbegal ont fait l'objet de fouilles programmées portant sur la partie basse du bâtiment dont les résultats généraux ont déjà fait l'objet d'une communication. Elles ont permis de compléter le plan du bâtiment, d'en remonter la date de construction au début du IIe siècle et d'en préciser l'implantation dans la vallée des Baux. La fouille proprement dite était restée inédite. Les faits archéologiques sont décrits et les contextes stratigraphiques sont précisés (Ph. Leveau, K. Wahh, G. Bertucchi). Les données numismatiques (J.-P. Bost) et céramologiques (B. Tremmel) sont publiées. Compte tenu de la constitution des contextes archéologiques et de leur relation avec l'histoire hydrologique du Marais des Baux (évolution du plan d'eau), une place importante est accordée au problème environnemental qui a été éclairé par des collaborations pluridisciplinaires (H. Bruneton). Il a paru nécessaire de compléter la publication des données des fouilles par l'apport de l'opération d'archéologie préventive occasionnée par le passage d'un Gazoduc dans la vallée des Baux durant l'été 1996.
Le département de la Creuse a restitué jusqu'ici vingt-huit trésors monétaires connus, dont cinq gaulois et vingt-trois gallo-romains. Les trésors creusois sont en général très modestes, mais les pièces d'or sont fréquentes. La répartition chronologique des dépôts situe de très nombreux enfouissements au Ier siècle avant J.-C. et dans la seconde moitié du IIIe siècle après J.-C, c'est-à-dire aux périodes de crise. L'absence totale de trésors du IVe siècle, habituelle en Gaule méridionale, peut manifester une sclérose des circuits monétaires jointe à une dépréciation du numéraire.
