at 4890 m above sea level (asl) on the Antizana Glacier 15 (0.71 km 2 ; 0°28 0 S, 78°09 0 W) in the tropical Andes of Ecuador (inner tropics). These variables were used to compute the annual cycle of the local surface energy balance (SEB). The four radiative fluxes were directly measured, and the turbulent fluxes were calculated using the bulk aerodynamic approach, calibrating the roughness length by direct sublimation measurements. The meteorological conditions are relatively homogeneous throughout the year (air temperature and air humidity). There is a slight seasonality in precipitation with a more humid period between February and June. During June-September, wind velocity shows high values and is responsible for intense turbulent fluxes that cause reduction of melting. Considering the SEB over the whole year, it is dominated by net radiation, and albedo variations govern melting. During the period under consideration the net short-wave radiation S (123 W m À2 ) and the sensible turbulent heat flux H (21 W m À2 ) were energy sources at the glacier surface, whereas the net long-wave radiation L (À39 W m À2 ) and the latent turbulent heat flux LE (À27 W m À2 ) represented heat sinks. Since the O°C isotherm-glacier intersection always oscillates through the ablation zone and considering that the phase of precipitation depends on temperature, temperature indirectly controls the albedo values and thus the melting rates. This control is of major interest in understanding glacier response to climate change in the Ecuadorian Andes, which is related to global warming and ENSO variability.

[1] The objective of this study is to evaluate the surface energy balance (SEB) of a cold, high-altitude tropical glacier, Illimani (16°39 0 S; 67°47 0 W, 6340 m above sea level (asl)), where a 137 m ice core was drilled down to the bedrock in June 1999. During the dry austral winter, tropical glaciers are known to experience strong sublimation, which may be responsible for snow composition changes through postdepositional processes. In order to help toward the interpretation of this climatic archive, SEB experiments were carried out in 1999, 2001, and 2002, during the dry season (mostly clear and cold atmosphere, strong westerly winds). The daily net all-wave radiation is usually negative during this austral dry winter because of the highly reflective snow surface and because of reduced incoming longwave radiation due to a low cloudiness compared to outgoing long-wave radiation. The turbulent heat fluxes were evaluated using the bulk aerodynamic approach, including stability correction. The roughness parameters are deduced from direct sublimation measurements and serve as calibration parameters. The sensible heat flux strongly heats the surface at night but changes to negative values during daytime unstable conditions (between 1000 and 1600 LT). The latent heat flux is always negative, which means that the surface loses mass through sublimation, particularly in the daytime (sublimation rates are À1.2 mm w.e.

Abstract. In the sub-Saharan Sahel, energy and water cycling at the land surface is pivotal for the regional climate, water resources and land productivity, yet it is still very poorly documented. As a step towards a comprehensive climatological description of surface fluxes in this area, this study provides estimates of long-term average annual budgets and seasonal cycles for two main land use types of the cultivated Sahelian belt: rainfed millet crop and fallow bush. These estimates build on the combination of a 7-year field data set from two typical plots in southwestern Niger with detailed physically based soil-plant-atmosphere modeling, yielding a continuous, comprehensive set of water and energy flux and storage variables over this multiyear period. In the present case in particular, blending field data with mechanistic modeling makes the best use of available data and knowledge for the construction of the multivariate time series. Rather than using the model only to gap-fill observations into a composite series, model-data integration is generalized homogeneously over time by generating the whole series with the entire data-constrained model simulation. Climatological averages of all water and energy variables, with associated sampling uncertainty, are derived at annual to subseasonal scales from the time series produced. Similarities and differences in the two ecosystem behaviors are highlighted. Mean annual evapotranspiration is found to represent ∼ 82-85 % of rainfall for both systems, but with different soil evaporation/plant transpiration partitioning and different seasonal distribution. The remainder consists entirely of runoff for the fallow, whereas drainage and runoff stand in a 40-60 % proportion for the millet field. These results should provide a robust reference for the surface energy-and water-related studies needed in this region. Their significance and the benefits they gain from the innovative data-model integration approach are thoroughly discussed. The model developed in this context has the potential for reliable simulations outside the reported conditions, including changing climate and land cover.Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union.

Core Ideas AMMA‐CATCH is a long‐term critical zone observatory in West Africa. Four sites sample the sharp ecoclimatic gradient characteristic of this region. Combined measurements of meteorology, water, and vegetation dynamics began in 1990. Intensification of rainfall and hydrological cycles is observed. The strong overall re‐greening may hide contrasted changes. West Africa is a region in fast transition from climate, demography, and land use perspectives. In this context, the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA)–Couplage de l'Atmosphère Tropicale et du Cycle eco‐Hydrologique (CATCH) long‐term regional observatory was developed to monitor the impacts of global change on the critical zone of West Africa and to better understand its current and future dynamics. The observatory is organized into three thematic axes, which drive the observation and instrumentation strategy: (i) analyze the long‐term evolution of eco‐hydrosystems from a regional perspective; (ii) better understand critical zone processes and their variability; and (iii) meet socioeconomic and development needs. To achieve these goals, the observatory has gathered data since 1990 from four densely instrumented mesoscale sites (∼104 km2 each), located at different latitudes (Benin, Niger, Mali, and Senegal) so as to sample the sharp eco‐climatic gradient that is characteristic of the region. Simultaneous monitoring of the vegetation cover and of various components of the water balance at these four sites has provided new insights into the seemingly paradoxical eco‐hydrological changes observed in the Sahel during the last decades: groundwater recharge and/or runoff intensification despite rainfall deficit and subsequent re‐greening with still increasing runoff. Hydrological processes and the role of certain key landscape features are highlighted, as well as the importance of an appropriate description of soil and subsoil characteristics. Applications of these scientific results for sustainable development issues are proposed. Finally, detecting and attributing eco‐hydrological changes and identifying possible regime shifts in the hydrologic cycle are the next challenges that need to be faced.
