Le diocèse d'Angers cannait un grand développement des confréries à partir du XIVe siècle, tant dans les villes que dans les paroisses rurales (33 confréries sont connues à Angers, 61 dans le reste du diocèse au milieu du XVIe siècle). La plupart d'entre-elles sont établies dans les églises du clergé séculier. Par leurs dédicaces et par leurs dévotions, les confréries du diocèse restent fidèles à une spiritualité traditionnelle, seule la multiplication des messes dites à l'intention des confrères paraissant caractéristique de la période. L'étude du gouvernement, de la gestion et du recrutement des associations démontre une forte intégration paroissiale des confréries du diocèse entre le XIVe et le XVIe siècle.
