Éduquées dans le respect de l'homme -du père d'abord, du mari ensuite- les femmes Peul et Bella ne bénéficient pas d'un statut social à la hauteur de leurs activités économiques. Le but du présent article est de démontrer cette opposition entre la place des femmes au sein de ces sociétés islamisées, leur dépendance vis-à-vis du mari, et leur rôle économique. En effet, grâce aux revenus tirés de l'artisanat et du commerce, elles perpétuent la vie du groupe.
Depuis quelques décennies déjà, les spécialistes (géographes ou non) ont reconnu le potentiel de développement des régions drainées par le Sourou et la Volta Noire. Longtemps restés au stade d'études, certains projets sont en cours de réalisation : ainsi,, le barrage sur le Sourou est achevé depuis le mois de juillet 1977, le casier de Guiédougou — après quelques années de balbutiements — prévoyait pour 1976-1977 le recrutement de 140 nouveaux exploitants, et l'Autorité des Aménagements des Vallées des Volta a entrepris l'installation de colons dans la Bougouriba (1977).
Le présent article n'a d'autre but que, d'une part, de faire la photographie d'une région à un moment donné de son développement, et, d'autre part, d'essayer de préciser des voies positives ou soulever des problèmes sociaux et économiques que l'on pourraient intituler «les contraintes d'une réussite».
