This article reflects on the ethical and civic value of the Service Learning projects, from a bibliographic review process, but also from an own foundation based on a hermeneutical analysis of this teaching-learning methodology. It is concluded that the Service Learning projects contribute to a practical synthesis between the ethics of care and that of justice, and contributes to a new definition of the concept of education, while those projects encourage meaningful learning and ethical and civic dimension of educational processes, according with proposals for human development and education understood as a common good from international organizations such as Unesco. After the theoretical foundation, we present a case of the institutionalization of Service Learning in Higher Education (Universitat de València), from the reconsideration of the university as a public space committed to the professional ethics and university social responsibility. nueva LOMCE.
The capability approach is a very fruitful framework for thinking about and assessing the human development of societies. Our purpose in this paper is to analyse whether the capability approach is a suitable way to illuminate education as a common good and how education must be understood as a common good. For this purpose, it is important to first consider the criticism that the capability approach is excessively individualistic. Rather than dwelling on the concept of ‘collective capability’, we will explore the extent to which the capability approach enables us to understand the concept of the ‘common good’ of education not in non‐collectivist terms but in terms of human development of individuals and communities as custodians of humanity.
Drawing on the contributions of some of the most recent and relevant studies on neuroethics and moral neuroeducation, this paper undertakes an analysis of compassion. In order to focus on the results of this neuroscientific research a reductionist naturalist framework is set aside in order to embrace the broader outlook of a moral neuroeducation that, firstly, refuses to reduce its normative character to the human capacity for evolutionary adaptation; and, secondly, seeks to locate within the brain the neuronal foundations for the development of a capacity for compassion towards those of one’s own community, and also those from outside it. Thereby, this capacity for compassion moves beyond empathic tribalism.
The aim of this paper is to highlight the relevance of the philosophical legacy of Karl-Otto Apel in light of the dialogue with the philosophy of Charles Taylor. The paper is focused on the last published books of Charles Taylor and a critical interpretation of some of his main ideas from the Apel’s transcendental pragmatics is addressed. Plunging its roots in the hermeneutic and critical matrix, Karl-Otto Apel's ethic of discourse continues to offer a fruitful dialectic between reality and ideality that is unavoidable to face the future of humanity with guarantees.
