Introduction/Objective The objective of the study was to investigate whether there are differences in therapeutic effect between initial treatments of chronic periodontitis [scaling and root planning (SRP)] alone and SRP in conjunction with injectable platelet-rich fibrin (I-PRF) application, comparing clinical parameters after three months. Methods Twenty-four patients with chronic periodontitis who had at least two sites with probing pocket depth (PPD) ≥ 5 mm on contralateral side participated in the study. Using a split-mouth design, the patients were treated with SRP + I-PRF (study group) or SRP only (control group). The clinical parameters, clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival margin level (GML), PPD, bleeding on probing, and plaque index, were recorded on both sides. Results Compared to baseline, both treatment modalities demonstrated an improvement in investigated clinical parameters. The mean value of CAL was reduced from 1.97 ± 0.75 (0.25-3.31) to 1.07 ± 0.44 (0.12-1.78) in the study group, whereas it decreased from 1.81 ± 0.66 (0.42-2.96) to 1.48 ± 0.55 (0.22-2.30) in the control group. Similarly, the corresponding values for GML and PPD showed statistically significant difference between the groups (p = 0.040 and p = 0.006, respectively). Conclusion Regardless the limited number of patients in the study, initial periodontal therapy in conjunction with injectable platelet-rich fibrin proved to display significant improvement in all clinical parameters compared to initial periodontal therapy alone.
Conflict of interest: none declared.IntroductionAnemia is a blood disorder characterized by abnormally low levels of healthy red blood cells or reduced hemoglobin, the iron-bearing protein in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to tissues throughout the body. The most common symptoms of this disorder are fatigue, weakness and, in extreme cases, shortness of breath or palpitations, or you may have no symptoms at all. Sports anemia is a term loosely applied to a least three different conditions: hemodilution, iron deficiency anemia and foot-strike anemia. Not exclusive to athletes, iron deficiency anemia occurs most often among women who may lose more iron each month when they menstruate than they take in.Material and MethodsTherefore, we examined its effect on the physical condition of female athletes. Several years (since 2010th until 2012th), we studied how anemia among girls (pioneers, juniors and seniors categories) that are involved in sports (women’s soccer, volleyball and handball) in Rasina’s district (Serbia), affecting their physical fitness. When their trainers approach to us, complaining that they have players who are great, so extraordinary talents, but by no means able to withstand more than twenty minutes in the game, we suggest them to perform laboratory tests. It was tested 134th female athletes. Results and DiscussionAnemia was observed in 43. (9. pioneers, 19. juniors and 15. seniors). So, laboratory results showed that in these girls anemia causes poor sport condition. After that, the girls enhanced nutrition. Their diet consisted of iron supplements and vitamins. Altitude training was organized for them, also. After all these treatments, condition significantly improved. It was first time that trainers in Rasina’s district realizing significance of laboratory tests.
Introduction:Cervical carcinoma is one of the leading health issues for women throughout the world. In 90% of the cases cervical carcinoma develops after development of invasive lesions of the uterine cervix or 10-15 years before they are diagnosed using cytological screening–Papanicolau test. Infection with human papilloma virus is considered to be the basic etiological cause of development of CIN and cervical carcinoma.Goal:Of this research was to determine frequency and type of abnormal cytological results in HPV positive and HPV negative patients.Material and Methods:Research is descriptive analytical, comparative and partly epidemiological, of mostly clinically applicable character. Used data included information on total number of examinations, type of exam, results of cytological and pathohistological diagnostics, HPV findings in cervix smear and HPV type in the period between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2011.Results:During the period of analysis total number of Pap tests was 6376 (43.33%), in comparison to other exams 7828 (56.67%). For this period total number of L-SIL and H-SIL (PAPA III) was 395 (6.20%), in comparison to other results 5894 (92.44%). After analysis largest subset of HPV positive patients had pathohistological diagnosis of CIN I that is 250 (43.10%) of them, then CIN II with 162 (27.93%) patients, CIN III with 149 (25.69) and 3 (0.52%) patients had CIS while 16 (2.76%) had a clear test result. We can conclude there is a statistically significant margin of frequency between positive HPV results in relation to diagnosis. Highest percentage of L-SIL and H-SIL (PAPA III) test results was in 2010 and was 9.5%, and lowest in 2009 with 4.34%. Largest number of patients, 43.0%, with HPV positive results after cervical smear had pathohistological diagnosis of CIN I.
Introduction Patients with schizophrenia are likely to constitute a high-risk group of individuals with respect to prevalence of oral diseases and they require special attention. Factors like nature of psychiatric disorders, length of stay and oral-side effects of psychotropic medications have been noted as contributors to poor oral health among institutionalized chronic psychiatric patients. Methods This cross-sectional study comprised 190 inpatients with schizophrenia at the Dr Laza Lazarevic Clinic for Mental Disorders in Belgrade, and 190 mentally healthy patients at the
