RESUMENEl artículo examina la situación actual de la lengua mapuche, a través de los resultados de investigación entregados por tres recientes estudios sociolingüísticos basados en encuestas de amplia cobertura. En todos los casos se concluye que la vitalidad del mapuzugun se encuentra sujeta a un rápido retroceso. Las hipótesis que explican la pérdida de vitalidad y tendencias de desplazamiento presentan divergencias. Se discute cada una de ellas y se propone un esquema explicativo más completo.Palabras claves: Bilingüismo, pueblo mapuche, vitalidad lingüística, desplazamiento.
