This paper evaluates the toxicity associated with two industrial wastes used as raw material of geopolymers. These wastes are fly ash (FA) and spent catalyst catalytic cracking (FCC). The residues were characterized using techniques such as XRF, XRD, SEM and laser granulometry. Two geopolymers systems based on FA-100% and FCC-100% were produced using SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratios of 6,0 and 2,4 and Na2O/SiO2 of 0,20 and 0,25 respectively. The technique TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) was applied in order to evaluate the toxicity. Cr, V, Zn, Ni, As, Ba, Sr, Pb and Cd elements were analyzed. The results indicate that concentrations of heavy metals leachate (except V and As) are low compared with the environmental standards. The geopolymers studied are considered effective in terms of inmobilizing contaminants.
Currently, industrial, economic, and social growth has produced large amounts of solid waste, which harms the environment and human health. Coal bottom ash (CBA) is a waste produced by burning coal. A preliminary study on CBA, to be used as raw material for the clay bricks manufacture, is presented. CBA was characterized through the Laser Granulometry, X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques; besides, the real and apparent density and the content of organic matter. Furthermore, the environmental tests Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and Daphnia Pulex acute toxicity test, were applied. It was found that the CBA is an amorphous material, and is composed of oxides of silica, iron, aluminum, and others, while the environmental tests satisfactorily met the applicable standards. According to the results, it is concluded that the CBA has a great potential to be used in the manufacture of bricks.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the permeation properties of concrete added with a residue of a petrochemical industry located in Colombia, called catalytic cracking catalyst residue (FCC). Concrete samples with 10, 20 and 30 % of FCC incorporated as cement replacement were evaluated. As reference materials, concrete without addition and concrete added with 20 % of metakaolin (MK) were used. MK is a high performance pozzolan of chemical composition similar to the FCC. The properties studied, in addition to the compressive strength, were: water absorption by total immersion, porosity, surface absorption and capillary sorption. The results showed that the concrete added with FCC and MK had similar behavior, and were slightly higher than the control sample. The total absorption and porosity were below 5 % and 10 % respectively for all samples; this means that the incorporation of the addition reduces the permeability of concrete. In this sense, FCC is considered as a good alternative for producing more durable concrete, being the optimum percentage, 10 % cement replacement. Keywords: Fluid catalytic cracking, metakaolin, pozzolanic additions, blended concrete, permeation properties, durability.
