RESUMO Este artigo tem por objetivo traçar um panorama cultural da São Paulo na virada do século XIX para o XX, como pano de fundo para as transformações que repercutem nos modos de expressão e pensamento, via registros históricos. São analisados alguns trechos de um Diário de Dom José de Camargo de Barros, décimo-primeiro bispo de São Paulo, paulista. Além do entorno cultural da província de São Paulo, suas viagens em direção aos confins da província, atuais estados do Paraná e Santa Catarina, revelam dados linguísticos e toponímicos que ilustram o homem culto nesse período de transição. Para fins de cotejo, as Cartas de Álvares de Azevedo à sua mãe, escritas na mesma época, também são usadas. ABSTRACT This paper aims to show a cultural landscape of São Paulo at the late XIX century to the XX as backdrop for changes in thoughts and linguistic expression, through historical documents. The authors analyze some excerpts of Diaries written by the 11th Bishop of São Paulo, Dom José de Camargo de Barros.
