This entry addresses four main aspects of pronunciation teaching. First, teachers need a basic understanding of the pronunciation features of the language being taught and how these features contribute to overall intelligibility (in this entry, English is used as an example). Next, teachers need to set realistic goals for learner achievement, which generally means communicating with ease and success in the target language rather than attaining some idealized native speaker mastery. Third, teachers are guided to plan their instruction in a systematic way by first making learners aware of new patterns in the target language and then moving through a series of gradually less controlled tasks and activities. With this foundation, the reader is then introduced to a variety of techniques, tools, and technology along with available research on their effectiveness.
