Objetivos: mitigar recursos hospitalares devido a pandemia da COVID-19; analisar o crescimento microbiano dos artigos médico-hospitalares embalados em tecido de algodão duplo; validar a extensão do prazo de esterilidade de 7 para 21 dias. Método: estudo observacional, prospectivo, para melhoria da qualidade em saúde, conforme diretrizes EQUATOR. Realizado validação analítica em 4 etapas. Foi esterilizado em autoclave 45 pacotes de gazes hidrofílicas, embalados em tecido de algodão e realizada análise microbiológica das amostras. Resultados: após incubação em estufa por 24 horas e 48 horas as amostras em meio Brain Heart Infusion, a 37°C, em condições aeróbias, nos seus respectivos dias de análises (8º, 12º, 17º, 21º e 35º), não foi detectado crescimento microbiano em nenhuma das amostras. Conclusão: a validação da extensão do prazo de esterilização foi eficaz, pois todas as análises microbiológicas apresentaram resultados negativos. E ao reduzir ciclos desnecessários de autoclaves foi possível contribuir para a mitigação dos recursos institucionais.
